Waterstop 400 – Waterproofing Spray for Shoes & Boots

Leather, suede and nubuck all have one thing in common – none of them cope well with water on their own. Left untreated, rain and puddles leave watermarks, dull patches and, over time, real damage to the material. Waterstop 400 is the impregnation spray I recommend whenever a customer wants proper protection against the British weather, whatever their shoes or boots are made from. It creates an invisible barrier that makes the surface water-repellent, so rain, mud and everyday stains simply can’t get a grip.

It’s suitable across smooth leather, suede, nubuck and textile, which makes it a great all-rounder if you’ve got a mixed shoe collection or a pair with more than one material on the upper. At 800ml, one bottle covers a good number of treatments, so it’s worth keeping by the door for regular top-ups.

Why choose Waterstop 400?

  • Genuine water repellency – forms a protective barrier that stops rain and puddles soaking into the material.
  • Protects against dirt and stains – mud and everyday marks sit on the surface rather than sinking in, making cleaning far easier.
  • Works across materials – suitable for smooth leather, suede, nubuck and textile in a single product.
  • Large 800ml size – covers plenty of applications, ideal for households with multiple pairs of shoes and boots to protect.
  • Essential for British weather – regular use keeps footwear looking better for longer through the rainy months.

How to use Waterstop 400

  1. Make sure your shoes or boots are clean and completely dry before treating them.
  2. Shake the bottle well before spraying.
  3. Hold the can around 20cm from the shoe and spray an even, light coat over the entire surface, including seams.
  4. Leave to dry naturally for at least an hour, away from direct heat sources.
  5. Apply a second coat for extra protection on new shoes or before heavy winter use.
  6. Reapply every few weeks, or sooner if you’re wearing the shoes in wet conditions often.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I reapply?
For shoes worn regularly in wet weather, I’d suggest reapplying every few weeks. For occasional wear, treating them at the start of the season is usually enough to see you through.

Will it darken or change the colour of suede?
A light, even coat shouldn’t noticeably change the colour once fully dry, but I always recommend testing on a small, hidden area first, especially with pale suede.

Can I use it indoors?
It’s best used in a well-ventilated area or outdoors, letting the shoes dry away from direct heat such as radiators, which can affect both the spray and the material underneath.

Should I treat brand new shoes before wearing them?
Yes, I always recommend treating new shoes and boots before their first outing, rather than waiting until after they’ve already been caught in the rain once.

Where can I buy Waterstop 400 in the UK?
You can order it directly from Shoespecialist.co.uk. We offer free delivery on orders over £50, same-day dispatch when you order before 5pm, and a 60-day return policy.
