Van Bommel Shoe Polish 519 Dark Blue – 60ml – the house cream for navy leather
Navy shoes are one of the smartest things a man or woman can own, and one of the trickiest to keep looking right. Dark blue leather goes grey at the toe as it dries, and a black cream – the usual improvisation – kills the blue entirely. Shade 519 exists precisely so that you do not have to make that compromise.
This is the Van Bommel dark blue shoe polish, made by Van Bommel for their own shoes, in a 60ml pot. If you own a pair of their dark blue derbies, loafers or boots, this is the cream that was designed around the leather they used. The range covers eight shades, so there is a matching cream for almost anything in their line-up.
The cream is rich in beeswax, and that is what gives it the three things you actually want from a maintenance cream: gentle cleaning as you work it in, real nourishment that keeps the leather supple, and a natural shine that looks like leather rather than like plastic.
It is made for smooth leather, and it brings the original tone back out instead of coating over it. Use it on navy shoes, boots and bags. And do not restrict it to Van Bommel shoes – a good dark blue cream is a good dark blue cream, whoever made the shoe.
Why choose this Van Bommel dark blue shoe polish?
- Matched to navy leather. Shade 519 is a proper dark blue rather than a near-black, so it restores navy shoes without dulling them down the way a black cream inevitably does.
- Rich in beeswax. The high wax content keeps the leather supple and helps the flex creases across the vamp stay soft instead of hardening and cracking.
- Cleans as it feeds. The cream lifts light surface grime while it works, so a single session leaves the shoe genuinely cleaner as well as better nourished.
- A natural shine, not a plastic one. The shine builds up as you brush rather than being sprayed on, which is why it looks right on good leather and gets better with each polish.
- The maker’s own cream. This is Van Bommel’s own product, formulated around the leathers they use, and the range runs to eight shades so neighbouring colours are available if yours leans lighter.
- A generous 60ml pot. Sixty millilitres of cream, used thinly as it should be, will keep a pair of shoes looking their best for years rather than months.
How to use Van Bommel Shoe Polish
- Brush the shoes down with a dirt brush to remove dust and loose grit, and take the laces out.
- Clean the leather with a lotion, cleaner or renovator so the cream is going onto leather rather than onto old polish.
- Take a little cream on a cloth or dauber brush and work it into the leather in small circles.
- Cover the whole shoe, not just the worn areas, and feed the flex creases by bending the shoe gently as you work.
- Let the cream haze for around ten minutes so the waxes can settle.
- Buff briskly with a horsehair brush, then finish with a soft cloth. Add a second thin coat if the navy needs more depth.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use this on navy shoes from another brand?
Absolutely. There is nothing exclusive about it beyond the shade being matched to Van Bommel’s own leathers. If you have navy shoes from any maker, this dark blue cream will feed and recolour them exactly the same way. Test on the inside of the heel first if you want to check the tone against your leather.
Why not just use black cream on dark blue shoes?
Because black flattens the blue and takes the life out of it. Navy leather has depth and a slight warmth that reads as blue in daylight, and a black cream buries it – the shoes end up looking like tired black shoes rather than good navy ones. Once you have used a proper dark blue cream, you will not go back.
