TRG Supercolor Maroon 337 – a 150ml opaque spray that turns any pair a deep red brown
There comes a point where a shoe is past polishing. The colour has gone, the scuffs are down to the base leather, and no amount of cream is going to rescue it. That is where an opaque spray earns its keep – and this maroon leather spray paint from TRG is the one I reach for when a pair needs a genuine change of colour rather than a touch-up.
TRG the One have been making leather dyes in Spain since 1940, and Supercolor is their flagship opaque aerosol. It is a flexible paint, which is the crucial bit: it moves with the leather instead of cracking across the flex creases the way a rigid paint would. That flexibility is why it works on shoes, boots, bags and jackets alike, and on synthetics and vinyl as well as leather.
The other advantage of an opaque spray is that it goes both ways. Ordinary penetrating dyes only take you from light to dark. Supercolor covers, so you can bring a dark pair up to a lighter shade too – a lighter finish will simply need a couple more thin coats.
Why choose TRG Supercolor in Maroon?
Why I recommend an aerosol over a brush-on paint for a full recolour:
- Genuinely opaque coverage. Supercolor covers the old colour rather than tinting it, so 337 Maroon will read as a deep red brown whatever the shoe started out as.
- Flexible film. The paint stays elastic once dry, so it flexes with the upper. That is what stops a recolour crazing along the vamp after a fortnight of wear.
- Light to dark, and dark to light. Unlike a penetrating dye, an opaque spray works in both directions. Going lighter simply needs more thin coats.
- Works on more than leather. Smooth leather, synthetic leather, vinyl and canvas all take it, which makes it a proper option for trainers and bags as well as shoes.
- A 150ml aerosol goes a long way. Sprayed correctly – thin coats from about 25cm – one can will comfortably cover several pairs.
How to use TRG Supercolor in Maroon
Preparation is nine tenths of a good recolour. Do not skip the cleaning and de-finishing:
- Brush the shoes down to remove sand and dirt, and take the laces out.
- Clean the leather with a leather cleaner to strip off old wax, polish and paint. Where the leather has a glossy factory finish, use a finish remover so the paint has something to grip.
- Mask off the soles, welts and any parts you do not want painted, and work outdoors or in a very well ventilated space over newspaper.
- Shake the can thoroughly – a good thirty seconds – before you start.
- Spray in light, even passes from roughly 25 to 30cm away. Several thin coats always beat one thick coat, which will run and stay tacky.
- Let each coat dry fully before the next, and let the finished pair dry completely away from any heat source before you wear them.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go from black shoes to maroon?
Yes, but be patient. Strip the finish properly and build the colour in several thin coats. Covering black takes more coats than covering a mid brown, and rushing it is what causes runs.
Will the paint crack when I walk?
Not if it is applied thinly onto clean, de-finished leather. The film is designed to stay flexible. Cracking almost always comes from one thick coat applied over old polish.
Do I need to seal it afterwards?
It is not essential, but a finish or protector spray over the top will improve the durability and even out the sheen. It is a sensible last step on a pair you plan to wear hard.
Where can I buy TRG Supercolor in Maroon in the UK?

Recolouring a pair yourself is enormously satisfying, and it rescues shoes that would otherwise go in the bin. Take your time on the preparation and the spraying looks after itself.
