Description

TRG Super Colour Green Shoe Paint Spray 322 – 150ml Aerosol — a proper green that bends with the leather

There comes a point with a favourite pair where the leather is still sound but the colour has given up, and no amount of cream is going to bring it back. That is the moment for paint rather than polish. The difference matters more than most people expect, because ordinary paint sets hard and the first real flex at the toe box cracks it straight across the vamp.

TRG Super Colour is built for exactly that job. It is a spray paint for footwear that stays elastic once dry, so the film moves with the upper instead of splitting, and it is happy on leather and on synthetic materials alike. Shade 322 is a clear, confident green rather than a murky olive, and it is one of those colours that is almost impossible to buy off the shelf on a finished shoe, which is precisely why people reach for a tin of it.

The other thing worth knowing is that TRG works in both directions. Most footwear paints will only take you from light to dark, but this one will genuinely cover a darker upper if you are patient with the coats.

Why choose this TRG green shoe paint?

  • Elastic once dry. The dried film flexes with the leather rather than setting rigid, which is what stops it cracking at the flex point after a fortnight of wear. It is the single biggest difference between footwear paint and craft paint.
  • It works light to dark and dark to light. Very few sprays will genuinely cover a darker upper. This one will, provided you build it in thin coats and accept that a pale shade over a dark shoe wants an extra layer or two.
  • A spray, so it is quick. An aerosol lays down a far more even film than a brush and it gets into the seams and the welt line without leaving brush marks. A whole pair is an evening’s work rather than a weekend’s.
  • No finisher needed afterwards. Some systems make you buy a separate top coat to seal the job. TRG dries to its own finish, so the tin in your hand is the whole product.
  • Not just for shoes. The same aerosol handles bags, belts and leather jackets, which makes a tin go a lot further than one pair of boots.
  • A green you cannot buy ready-made. Shade 322 is a true green with real pigment behind it, and it turns a tired pair into something nobody else on the train is wearing.

How to use TRG Super Colour green shoe paint

The preparation takes longer than the spraying, and skipping the degreasing step is the one mistake that ruins an otherwise good job.

  1. Take the laces out and fit shoe trees or stuff the shoes with paper so the upper is held taut and smooth.
  2. Brush off the loose dirt and sand with a dirt brush, then go over the whole upper with a leather cleaner to strip old wax, polish and previous paint layers.
  3. Let the shoes dry completely at room temperature, well away from a radiator, before you go anywhere near the aerosol.
  4. Mask the sole, the midsole and anything else you want to keep clean with low-tack decorator tape, and work outdoors or by an open window.
  5. Shake the tin hard for a good half minute, then spray in light passes from around 20cm, keeping the can moving so nothing pools or runs.
  6. Build two or three thin coats rather than one heavy one, leaving each to dry properly, and give the finished pair several hours before you wear them.

My tip from behind the counter

Degrease properly, even when the shoes look clean. Factory finishes and years of polish leave a waxy film that the eye cannot see but the paint absolutely can, and that film is why paint lifts in sheets three weeks later. A cheap leather cleaner and two minutes per shoe is all it takes. If you do nothing else on this list, do this one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I spray green over a dark brown shoe?

Yes, and that is one of the reasons to choose TRG over a cheaper spray. Build it in thin coats and expect to use one more layer than you would over a pale upper, because a mid-tone green over dark brown needs the pigment to stack up before it reads as green rather than as a tint.

Will it crack when I walk?

Not if you degrease first and spray thin. The formula is deliberately elastic and it is made to flex at the vamp. Cracking almost always traces back to one heavy coat, or to spraying straight onto a glossy, waxy factory finish that the paint could never grip.

How many shoes will one tin cover?

For a single pair of adult shoes in two or three coats, one 150ml tin is comfortable and you will have some left over. If you are doing tall boots or a leather jacket, buy two and use them from the same batch so the shade matches. Store what is left upright with the cap on and it will keep perfectly well.
