TRG Red Suede Colour Renovator Spray 112 – Suede & Nubuck 250ml – bring red suede back from faded

Red suede is wonderful for about one season. Then the sun gets to the toes, the rain gets to the sides, and what was a confident red starts to look pink and patchy at the flex points. Brushing helps the nap but it cannot put colour back, and that is where most people give up on a pair they still like.

This aerosol is the answer. TRG have been making leather and suede care since 1940, and their Renovator Suede & Nubuck is a colour-refreshing spray rather than a dye: it lays pigment evenly into the nap, feeds the fibres and protects against moisture, while leaving the material itself looking and feeling like suede.

The part I like best is what it does not do. It does not affect the breathability of the material, and TRG have it tested and recommended for footwear and clothing membranes such as Gore-Tex. So your waterproof-breathable walking shoes stay waterproof and breathable, which is more than you can say for a lot of heavy recolouring products. It works on suede, nubuck and microfibre, and it dries quickly.

Why choose the TRG Red Suede Colour Renovator Spray?

  • Puts real colour back into faded red. The pigment goes into the nap rather than sitting on it as a skin, so the red comes back with depth and the shoe still looks like suede instead of painted leather.
  • Safe on breathable membranes. TRG test and recommend this spray for footwear and clothing membranes such as Gore-Tex, and it does not change how the material breathes. Walking shoes stay comfortable.
  • Protects against moisture at the same time. You are not choosing between colour and protection. The same coat that refreshes the red also helps rain and damp bead on the surface instead of soaking straight into the fibres.
  • Works on suede, nubuck and microfibre. One can covers most of the soft-nap wardrobe, from suede desert boots to nubuck trainers to microfibre uppers on modern hybrids.
  • Even coverage from an aerosol. Sprayed from the right distance an aerosol lays down a far more even coat than any sponge or brush can manage on a napped surface, which is exactly what you want when you are evening out sun-faded patches.
  • Dries quickly and brushes up soft. Half an hour and a brush is all it takes. The nap lifts back to its original texture rather than drying stiff or crusty.

How to use TRG Renovator Suede & Nubuck 112 Red

  1. Brush the shoes all over with a suede brush to lift the nap and take off loose dirt. Anything left on the surface will be sealed in.
  2. Deal with stains and shiny crushed patches first, using a suede eraser or a suede cleaner, and let everything dry completely before you spray.
  3. Mask off soles, laces and any smooth leather trim with tape, and work outdoors or in a well-ventilated space with newspaper underneath.
  4. Shake the can well for half a minute, then test on a hidden area such as the inside of the heel to check the shade against your shoes.
  5. Spray evenly from a distance of 20cm, keeping the can moving in long overlapping passes. Two light coats always beat one heavy one.
  6. Let the shoes dry for about 30 minutes, then brush the nap up again with a clean suede brush to restore the soft, even texture.

My tip from behind the counter

The 20cm is not a rough guide, it is the whole trick. Closer and you get dark blotches where the spray lands wet; further away and the pigment dries in the air and dusts on unevenly. Keep the can moving, never pause on one spot, and stop while the colour still looks slightly light: it deepens as it dries. Finish every job with a proper brushing, because that is what makes it look like suede again.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a dye or a colour refresher?

A refresher, and the difference matters. A dye is designed to change the colour of suede outright and needs the material stripped and prepared. This spray tops up the colour that is already there, evening out sun-faded toes and pale flex points. If your red suede has gone almost pink all over it will still help enormously, but it will not turn beige boots red.

Will it rub off on my clothes or on car seats?

Not once it has dried and been brushed out properly. The pigment binds into the nap rather than sitting loose on top. The one thing I would say is to give it the full half hour and then brush thoroughly, because it is the loose surplus that transfers, and brushing is what removes it.

Can I use it on red nubuck trainers?

Yes. Nubuck is simply a finer, tighter nap than suede and this spray is made for both, along with microfibre uppers. Mask the midsole and any smooth leather panels first, keep the coats light, and brush the nap up at the end and they will look remarkably close to new.
