TRG Navy Blue Nubuck Renovator Spray 117 – Suede and Nubuck 250ml – bring faded navy suede back to a deep, even blue
Navy suede is the colour I get asked about most, and it is also the colour that disappoints people fastest. A navy desert boot or a pair of navy suede loafers looks wonderful for a season, and then the sun lifts the toe caps, the rain darkens the sides, and the whole shoe drifts towards a tired grey-blue. Brushing lifts the nap again but it cannot put colour back, because there is no colour left in the nap to lift.
This aerosol is what I hand over at that point. TRG have been making leather and suede care since 1940, and their Renovator Suede and Nubuck is a colour-refreshing spray rather than a dye: it lays navy pigment evenly into the nap, feeds the fibres and helps the surface shed moisture, while leaving the material looking and feeling like suede rather than like painted leather.
The detail that sells it is what it does not do. It does not change how the material breathes, and TRG have it tested and recommended for footwear and clothing membranes such as Gore-Tex.
Why choose the TRG Navy Blue Nubuck Renovator Spray?
- Puts real navy back, not a coat of paint. The pigment settles into the nap instead of forming a skin over it, so the blue comes back with depth and the shoe still reads as suede rather than as painted leather.
- Navy stays navy instead of going black. Shade 117 is a true dark blue rather than a blue-black. Reach for a black product on navy suede and you flatten it into something muddy; this keeps the blue honest, which matters on the flex creases where the fading shows first.
- Safe on breathable membranes. TRG test and recommend this spray for footwear and clothing membranes such as Gore-Tex, and it does not alter the breathability of the material. Your waterproof walking shoes stay waterproof and comfortable.
- Colour and weather protection in one pass. You are not choosing between the two. The same coat that evens out the navy also helps rain and damp bead on the surface rather than soak straight down into the fibres.
- Suede, nubuck and microfibre all welcome. One 250ml can covers most of the soft-nap wardrobe: suede boots, nubuck trainers, microfibre uppers on modern hybrids, and the suede panels on a jacket or a handbag.
- An aerosol is simply more even on nap. Sprayed from the right distance, an aerosol lays down a far more uniform coat than any sponge or brush can manage on a napped surface. When you are levelling out sun-faded patches, uniform is the whole job.
How to use TRG Renovator Suede and Nubuck 117 Navy Blue
- Brush the shoes all over with a suede brush to lift the nap and remove loose dirt. Anything left on the surface gets sealed in under the pigment.
- Deal with stains and shiny crushed patches first, with a suede eraser or a suede cleaner, and let everything dry completely before you spray.
- Mask off the soles, the laces and any smooth leather trim with decorator tape, and work outdoors or in a well-ventilated room with newspaper underneath.
- Shake the can hard for half a minute, then test on a hidden area such as the inside of the heel to check the navy against your own shade.
- Spray in light, sweeping passes from roughly 20cm away, keeping the can moving so no single spot gets soaked. Two thin coats beat one heavy one every time.
- Leave the shoes to dry for about 30 minutes away from direct heat, then brush the nap back up with a suede brush. Repeat if the colour still looks uneven.
My tip from behind the counter
Do both shoes of the pair even if only one looks faded, and do the whole shoe rather than the worn patch. Suede shows a repair line ruthlessly, and a spot treatment on one toe cap is far more visible than a slightly refreshed pair. And spray it on a dry, mild day if you can; cold air makes the aerosol spit and gives you a speckled finish.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a dye or a colour refresher?
A refresher. It restores pigment that has faded out of the nap and protects while it does so, but it does not penetrate and permanently recolour the way an alcohol-based dye does. That makes it far more forgiving to use, and it is the right choice when you want the shade you already had back rather than a different colour.
Will it make my suede stiff or shiny?
Not if you keep the coats thin and brush the nap up once it is dry. Stiffness comes from soaking a napped surface, which is exactly what the 20cm distance and the two thin coats are there to prevent.
Can I use it on navy suede trainers with a fabric upper?
Yes. Collonil and TRG both intend this class of product for mixed materials, and TRG list microfibre alongside suede and nubuck. Mask the midsole carefully, because a white foam midsole will happily take navy pigment as well.
