TRG Easy Dye Black — bring faded leather and canvas back to life

I get asked about this one a lot: “my black shoes have gone a bit grey and scuffed at the toes, can they be saved?” More often than not, the answer is yes, and TRG Easy Dye Black is usually how I’d do it. It’s a proper leather and canvas dye rather than a polish, which means it actually recolours the material instead of just sitting on top of it. It works on smooth leather, synthetic leather and canvas, and it’s strong enough to take a worn white sole trim or a faded bag back to a rich, even black.

This isn’t just for repairs, either — plenty of customers use it to darken a pair of tan shoes to black, or to freshen up an old bag that’s lost its colour. It’s genuinely one of the most useful bottles you can have in your shoe care cupboard.

Why choose TRG Easy Dye Black?

  • True recolouring, not just polish — the pigment penetrates the material, so scuffs and pale patches are properly covered rather than temporarily masked.
  • Works on multiple materials — smooth leather, synthetic leather and canvas can all be treated with the same bottle.
  • Repairs as well as restyles — brilliant for scratched, worn or sun-faded items, and just as good if you simply fancy a colour change.
  • Easy to apply — comes with a sponge applicator, so there’s no need for brushes or spray equipment.
  • Long-lasting finish — once cured, the colour is flexible and durable, so it won’t crack or flake with normal wear.
  • Economical — a little goes a long way, so one 25ml bottle usually covers several pairs of shoes or a couple of larger items like bags.

How to use TRG Easy Dye Black

Clean the item thoroughly first and let it dry completely — any dirt or grease left on the surface will stop the dye taking evenly. Give the bottle a good shake, then apply a thin, even coat using the built-in sponge applicator, working in one direction. Let this first coat dry for around 30–60 minutes, then check the coverage. For heavily faded or very light-coloured items, apply a second (and if needed, third) thin coat rather than one thick layer, as this gives a much more even, professional result. Once you’re happy with the colour, leave the item to cure fully for 24 hours before wearing, and avoid getting it wet in that time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this on suede or nubuck?
No — Easy Dye is for smooth leather, synthetic leather and canvas. For suede or nubuck, have a look at our TRG Suede Nubuck Renovator instead.

How many coats will I need?
It depends how faded the item is. Most repairs need two thin coats; a full colour change from a lighter shade to black may need three. Thin coats always give a better finish than one thick one.

Does the dye rub off onto clothing or socks?
Once it’s fully cured — allow the full 24 hours — it shouldn’t transfer onto fabric during normal wear. In the first day after application, I’d avoid wearing pale socks or trousers with the item just to be safe, as the colour is still settling into the material during that time.

Where can I buy TRG Easy Dye Black in the UK?
You can order it directly from Shoespecialist.co.uk. We offer free delivery on orders over £50, same-day dispatch when you order before 5pm, and a 60-day return policy.
