TRG Easy Dye 166 Camel – bring faded leather and canvas back to life
Some of the most satisfying jobs in my shop are the simple ones: a tired pair of shoes or a much-loved bag that has gone dull and scuffed, brought right back to life in an afternoon. TRG Easy Dye Camel is how I do it. It is a proper dye rather than a polish, which means it recolours the material instead of just sitting on top of it — and unlike many dyes, it works on smooth leather, synthetic leather and canvas, so it is brilliant for trainers and plimsolls as well as smart shoes. It is the shade I reach for to bring camel and tan boots, loafers and bags back to that lovely warm, sandy colour they had when they were new.
This camel is a warm, mid-tan with a soft golden note. What I really like about Easy Dye is the clever double-sided sponge that comes in the pack: one side gently roughens the surface so the colour keys in properly, and the other applies the dye smoothly and evenly. The formula is water-based and solvent-free, so it is kinder to use at home, and once it has cured you do not need any separate lacquer or finish — the camel colour is durable and wear-resistant on its own.
Why choose TRG Easy Dye 166 Camel?
- True recolouring, not just polish — the warm camel pigment bonds with the material, so faded camel and tan leather is evenly recoloured rather than simply covered with polish.
- Works on leather and canvas — smooth leather, synthetic leather and canvas can all be dyed with the same bottle, so it is ideal for trainers, plimsolls, shoes and bags.
- Water-based and solvent-free — a more pleasant formula to work with at home, with no harsh solvent smell.
- Double-sided sponge included — one side preps the surface, the other applies the colour neatly, so you get a professional finish without brushes or spray gear.
- No finish needed — once cured the camel colour is flexible and hard-wearing, so it will not crack, peel or fade with normal wear.
- Economical — a little goes a long way, so a single 25ml bottle usually covers several pairs or a couple of larger items.
How to use TRG Easy Dye 166 Camel
- Clean the item thoroughly and let it dry completely — any dirt or grease left on the surface will stop the dye taking evenly.
- Test the colour on a hidden area first, such as the inside of the tongue, so you are happy with the shade.
- Lightly roughen the surface with the prep side of the sponge, then shake the bottle well.
- Apply a thin, even coat of camel dye with the sponge, working in one direction.
- Let each coat dry for around 30–60 minutes, then apply a second (or third) thin coat for full, even coverage — thin coats always beat one thick layer.
- Leave the item to cure fully for 24 hours before wearing, and keep it dry during that time.

Frequently asked questions
Will Camel match my tan boots?
Camel is a warm, sandy tan that suits most faded camel and tan leather beautifully. As always, the existing colour influences the finished shade, so test on a hidden area first and build the colour up gradually in thin coats.
Can I use it on a lighter pair that has yellowed?
Yes. Camel is a great choice for reviving pale tan or camel items that have gone patchy or dull. Just remember dye can only darken or refresh, never lighten, so it works best on shoes that are already a similar tone.
Do I need a lacquer or finish afterwards?
No. Once the dye has fully cured it is durable and wear-resistant on its own, so no separate lacquer is needed. If you like, you can buff smooth leather with a matching shoe cream for extra shine, but on canvas it is ready to wear as it is.
