TRG Easy Dye 111 Bordeaux – bring faded leather and canvas back to life

Some of the most rewarding jobs in my shop are the simple ones: a pair of bordeaux shoes that have gone dull and scuffed, or a favourite bag that has lost its colour, brought right back to life in an afternoon. TRG Easy Dye Bordeaux is how I do it. It is a proper dye rather than a polish, which means it recolours the material instead of just sitting on top of it — and unlike many dyes, it works on smooth leather, synthetic leather and canvas, so it is brilliant for trainers and plimsolls as well as smart shoes.

This shade is a deep, wine-red burgundy, and it is a favourite for reviving oxblood and burgundy brogues, loafers and boots, or adding a rich pop of colour to plain leather. What I really like about Easy Dye is the clever double-sided sponge that comes in the pack: one side gently roughens the surface so the colour keys in properly, and the other applies the dye smoothly and evenly. The formula is water-based and solvent-free, so it is kinder to use at home, and once it has cured you do not need any separate lacquer or finish — the colour is durable and wear-resistant on its own.

Why choose TRG Easy Dye 111 Bordeaux?

  • True recolouring, not just polish — the bordeaux pigment bonds with the material, so scuffs and faded patches are properly covered rather than briefly masked.
  • Works on leather and canvas — smooth leather, synthetic leather and canvas can all be dyed with the same bottle, so it is ideal for trainers, plimsolls, shoes and bags.
  • Water-based and solvent-free — a more pleasant formula to work with at home, with no harsh solvent smell.
  • Double-sided sponge included — one side preps the surface, the other applies the colour neatly, so you get a professional finish without brushes or spray gear.
  • No finish needed — once cured the bordeaux colour is flexible and hard-wearing, so it will not crack, peel or fade with normal wear.
  • Economical — a little goes a long way, so a single 25ml bottle usually covers several pairs or a couple of larger items.

How to use TRG Easy Dye 111 Bordeaux

  1. Clean the item thoroughly and let it dry completely — any dirt or grease left on the surface will stop the dye taking evenly.
  2. Test the colour on a hidden area first, such as the inside of the tongue, so you are happy with the shade.
  3. Lightly roughen the surface with the prep side of the sponge, then shake the bottle well.
  4. Apply a thin, even coat of bordeaux dye with the sponge, working in one direction.
  5. Let each coat dry for around 30–60 minutes, then apply a second (or third) thin coat for full, even coverage — thin coats always beat one thick layer.
  6. Leave the item to cure fully for 24 hours before wearing, and keep it dry during that time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Bordeaux and a plain red?
Bordeaux is a deep, wine-red burgundy rather than a bright postbox red — think classic oxblood brogues and burgundy loafers. It is a sophisticated shade that suits smart leather footwear beautifully. Test on a hidden area first to see how it looks on your leather.

Will it cover scuffs on my burgundy shoes?
Yes. The pigment recolours the leather rather than just masking marks, so scuffed toes and faded panels on burgundy or oxblood shoes are properly covered. Build it up in thin coats for the most even finish.

Do I need a lacquer or finish afterwards?
No. Once the dye has fully cured it is durable and wear-resistant on its own, so no separate lacquer is needed. If you like, you can buff smooth leather with a matching shoe cream for extra shine, but on canvas it is ready to wear as it is.

Where can I buy TRG Easy Dye 111 Bordeaux in the UK?
