Tarrago Shoe Cream Black (018) 50ml – Nourishing Wax Shoe Cream – beeswax and carnauba cream that feeds, shines and deepens black leather

If you only keep one product for your black shoes, make it a good pigmented cream. Tarrago Shoe Cream Black is the classic choice: a soft, wax-rich cream in a 50ml glass jar that feeds the leather, tops up the colour where the shoe has faded and buffs up to a warm, natural shine in a couple of minutes.

The formula is built on natural waxes – carnauba for shine and hardness, beeswax for suppleness and water resistance – with enough pigment to hide the pale creases across the vamp and the grey haze that black leather develops after a winter of rain and salt. It nourishes and colours in one pass, which is why cobblers reach for a cream like this before they reach for a hard wax polish.

Because it is a cream rather than a solvent-heavy polish, it stays gentle on the leather. You can use it every couple of weeks on shoes you wear often without the upper drying out or the surface building into a thick, brittle layer. It works on synthetic leather too, which makes it handy for smart trainers and school shoes.

Tarrago make this cream in a genuinely enormous range of shades, so if you also own brown brogues or navy loafers you can match them from the same line. I have used this Tarrago shoe cream black on everything from Oxfords to Chelsea boots, and it is honestly hard to beat for the money.

Why choose Tarrago Shoe Cream in black?

  • Feeds and colours at the same time. The pigment covers scuffs and faded creases while the waxes and oils keep the leather supple, so one product does the job of two.
  • Natural wax base. Carnauba and beeswax give a warm, honest shine that builds with brushing rather than the plastic gloss you get from cheap silicone dressings.
  • Kind to the leather. A cream carries far less solvent than a hard polish, so regular use will not dry out or crack the upper on the shoes you wear most.
  • Fast and easy. Apply, wait five minutes for the wax to sink in, then brush. That is a two-minute job before you leave the house, not a Sunday afternoon project.
  • Works on synthetic leather. Smart trainers, school shoes and coated uppers all take this cream, so you can use one jar across the whole rack.
  • Great value in a 50ml jar. A jar this size lasts most people a year or more, because you only need a thin film each time.

How to use Tarrago Shoe Cream

  1. Brush the shoes down with a horsehair brush to remove dust and grit, and let them dry fully if they are damp.
  2. Take a small amount of cream on a soft cloth, an applicator brush or a dauber – far less than you think you need.
  3. Spread it evenly over the upper in small circles, working it into the creases across the vamp and around the heel where the colour fades first.
  4. Leave the shoes for about five minutes so the waxes can settle into the leather rather than sitting on top of it.
  5. Brush briskly with a clean polishing brush, then finish with a soft cloth if you want a deeper shine. Repeat on badly faded areas if needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between shoe cream and shoe polish?

A cream like this one carries more pigment and more nourishing oils, so it feeds the leather and restores colour. A hard wax polish carries more wax and is built for shine and for building a glassy toe cap. Cream first, wax on top if you want a mirror finish.

Will it come off on my socks or trousers?

Not once it has been brushed out properly. The important step is the final brushing, which removes any surplus pigment sitting on the surface. If you have applied a heavy coat, give it a few extra strokes with a soft cloth before you wear the shoes.

How often should I use it?

For shoes in weekly rotation, every three or four wears is plenty. Boots that get soaked in winter benefit from a cream as soon as they have dried out, because the drying process is what pulls the natural oils out of the leather.

Can I use black cream on very dark brown or navy shoes?

I would not. Black is heavily pigmented and will dull a dark brown or navy upper rather than refresh it. Tarrago make this cream in dozens of shades, so it is worth matching properly – send me a photo if you are not sure which one to pick.
