Description

Tarrago Sneakers Paint Navy Blue 017 – 25ml Flexible Trainer Paint — a deep navy that bends with the shoe

Customising a pair of trainers is one of the most satisfying jobs you can do at the kitchen table, and the paint you choose decides whether the result lasts a fortnight or a couple of years. Ordinary craft paint sets rigid, and the first proper flex at the toe box cracks it straight across. Footwear paint is a different formulation altogether.

This navy blue trainer paint from Tarrago is a water-based acrylic built specifically for footwear, so the dried film flexes rather than splitting. Shade 017 is a proper deep navy rather than a bright royal blue, which makes it one of the most useful colours in the range: it covers a faded panel convincingly, it goes over most mid-tones in two or three coats, and it is dark enough to rescue a scuffed toe cap that a lighter shade would only highlight.

The 25ml box holds the bottle, a brush, an application sponge and a dosing cap, so you can start straight away. It is happy on smooth leather, coated leather and synthetics, and on canvas or mesh once mixed with Tarrago Sneakers Soft Maker.

Why choose this navy blue trainer paint?

  • Flexible once dry. The acrylic film moves with the upper, so it survives the constant bending at the toe box that ordinary craft paint simply cannot handle. That single property is what the product exists for.
  • Touch-dry in minutes. Each thin coat dries in roughly one to three minutes, which makes layering quick and keeps a whole project inside a single evening.
  • Water-based and low odour. No solvent fumes, and the brush rinses out under the tap. You can work indoors in winter without opening every window in the house.
  • Everything is in the box. Bottle, brush, application sponge and dosing cap are all included, so a first-time customiser is not immediately short of the right applicator.
  • Navy covers generously. A deep navy has the pigment density to go over most mid-tone uppers in two or three coats, which makes it far more forgiving than a pastel.
  • Mixable and layerable. Blend it with other shades from the range to hit a specific blue, or build coverage in thin layers for a clean, even finish.

How to use Tarrago Sneakers Paint 017

The preparation takes longer than the painting, and on a glossy factory finish it is the only thing standing between you and a peeling repaint.

  1. Clean the trainers thoroughly and take the laces out, so the surface is free of dirt, wax and grease.
  2. On coated or shiny leather, wipe the area with a deglazer or preparer so the paint has something to grip.
  3. Shake the bottle well and decant a little paint using the dosing cap rather than working straight from the bottle.
  4. Apply a thin, even first coat with the brush or the sponge and let it dry for one to three minutes.
  5. Build two or three thin coats rather than one thick one, drying between each, and mask the midsole with low-tack tape for a crisp line.
  6. Leave the finished pair to cure for at least a few hours before wearing, and mix in Sneakers Soft Maker first for canvas, mesh or denim.

My tip from behind the counter

Navy is the shade where people most often skip the deglazer, because a dark colour looks like it is covering beautifully on the first coat. It is not gripping, though, and about three weeks later the paint starts lifting at the flex point in one satisfying sheet. Wipe the panel with a preparer before you start, even if the coverage looks perfect without it. Two minutes now, or the whole job again next month.

Frequently asked questions

Will the paint crack when I walk?

Not if you apply it in thin coats onto a clean, degreased surface. The formula is made to flex, and cracking almost always comes from one heavy coat, or from painting straight onto a glossy factory finish without preparing it first.

Can I paint canvas trainers with it?

Yes, but mix the paint with Tarrago Sneakers Soft Maker first. On its own the acrylic can stiffen a soft fabric, and the additive keeps canvas, mesh and denim flexible and comfortable to wear.

How much will 25ml cover?

For picking out panels, a heel tab, a swoosh or a toe cap, one bottle goes a long way and will see you through several projects. For a full repaint of a pair of adult trainers in two or three coats, budget two bottles and buy them at the same time so the batch matches. Navy is more economical than a pale shade because it covers in fewer coats. If you are mixing a custom blue, buy extra, because matching a hand-mixed shade a fortnight later is close to impossible.
