Tarrago Navy Blue Penetrating Dye 017 – 50ml – deep navy that goes into the leather, not onto it

Navy leather is lovely until it starts to fade. Blue pigments are the first to suffer from sunlight and salt, so a smart navy loafer or a pair of blue boots can end up looking washed out and slightly grey long before the leather itself is worn out. A navy shoe cream helps for a week or two. Tarrago Penetrating Dye 017 fixes it for good.

This is a proper alcohol-based dye rather than a pigmented cream. The carrier takes the navy pigment down into the fibres of the leather, so the colour becomes part of the hide instead of a coating on the outside. The practical upshot is a rich, even navy that survives brushing, rain and rubbing.

017 Navy Blue is a deep, slightly inky blue — the sort of navy you would want on a Derby or a chukka boot rather than a bright royal blue. It covers faded navy, light blue and mid-blue leather without trouble, and it will also take a pale tan or beige leather to navy if you fancy a complete change of direction.

Every bottle holds 50ml and arrives with a flat paintbrush in the box. Tarrago have been making leather care in Spain since 1940, and this is one of the lines their trade customers rely on for high coverage and fast, clean absorption.

Why choose Tarrago Penetrating Dye?

  • Brings faded navy back to life – blue is the pigment that fades fastest in daylight, and a single coat of 017 restores the depth that a sun-bleached navy upper has lost without darkening it to black.
  • Colour that lives inside the leather – the alcohol carrier drives the pigment into the fibre structure, so there is no film to crack or peel and the natural grain of the leather stays visible.
  • Covers scuffs and bare patches – worn toe caps, rubbed heel counters and scraped welts take the dye readily, which levels the whole upper back to one consistent shade.
  • Flat brush included – the applicator supplied with the bottle is the right shape for uppers, letting you work colour into seams, stitching and the welt line neatly.
  • Not just for shoes – it works equally well on navy bags, belts and leather jackets, and it takes on synthetic leather and patent leather as well as the real thing.
  • Low rub-off, high friction resistance – once cured, the finish resists rubbing and leaves nothing behind on your socks, your hands or a light coloured lining.

How to use Tarrago Penetrating Dye

  1. Unlace the shoes and pack them out with paper or shoe trees, so the creases open up and the leather is held flat while you work.
  2. Clean the surface with Tarrago Conditioner or a leather cleaner to lift off wax, old cream and any waterproofing spray. Dye will not penetrate a sealed surface.
  3. Shake the bottle hard for twenty seconds or so. Navy pigment settles heavily, and an under-mixed bottle gives you a weak, uneven blue.
  4. Apply thinly and evenly with the enclosed brush, working with the grain and starting along the welt and the seams where the leather is most absorbent.
  5. Give it about 30 minutes to dry, then check the depth of colour in daylight and lay on a second thin coat if the old shade is still showing through.
  6. When the dye is fully dry, work in a navy or colourless shoe cream and buff with a horsehair brush to bring back the suppleness and a soft shine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn tan or beige shoes navy with this?

Yes — that is one of the nicest uses for it. Because you are working from light to dark, a pale tan, beige or natural leather will take navy well. Strip the finish thoroughly first, then build the colour up in two or three thin coats rather than one heavy one, and expect the result to read as a deep inky navy rather than a bright blue. What you cannot do is go the other way and lighten a black or dark brown shoe.

Will navy dye look patchy over an already blue shoe?

It should not, provided you clean properly and keep the coats thin. Faded navy leather is absorbent and takes pigment evenly. The usual cause of patchiness is old polish still sitting in the flexed areas across the vamp, so spend a little longer with the cleaner on those creases and the dye will lay down smoothly.
