Tarrago Dark Brown Premium Shoe Polish 06 – 50ml Natural Wax Polish Tin – beeswax to feed the leather, carnauba to bring the shine

Most people own a tin of polish that does exactly one thing: it shines. This dark brown premium shoe polish does rather more, because Tarrago built it on two different waxes that each have a job to do. Beeswax nourishes and softens the leather so it stays comfortable and flexible, and carnauba – the hardest natural wax there is – delivers the gloss and the water protection on top.

It is also heavily pigmented, which matters enormously once a pair of shoes reaches the age where the toe caps have gone pale and the heel counters are scuffed back to a lighter brown. Shade 06 Dark Brown is the deep, cool chocolate end of the brown range: darker than the medium brown tin, and the right match for the dark brown calf used on Oxfords, Derbies, brogues and Chelsea boots.

The 50ml aluminium tin is water-based, which is why it smells of almost nothing and washes off your hands instead of staining them for the rest of the day. That is a bigger deal than it sounds if you polish your shoes at the kitchen table on a Sunday evening rather than in a shed. At £8.99 a tin, and given how little you use at a time, this is years of Monday mornings.

Why choose the Tarrago dark brown premium shoe polish?

Two waxes, two jobs, and a pigment load that actually covers.

  • Beeswax and carnauba together. Beeswax feeds and softens the leather while carnauba builds a hard, glossy film that resists water and scuffing. You are not choosing between care and shine.
  • Serious pigment load. The high concentration of pigment gives real coverage, so pale toe caps, heel scuffs and worn creases go back to an even dark brown rather than being glazed over.
  • Water-based formula. No harsh solvent smell, no leather dried out over the years by repeated solvent exposure, and far kinder to your hands than an old-fashioned paste.
  • Builds to a mirror shine. Layered in tiny amounts with a single drop of water, the carnauba burnishes up to the glassy finish people always ask about – and unlike a cheap gloss, it holds.
  • A tin that lasts. 50ml of wax is a very long time in polish terms. Used properly, a single tin will see a favourite pair of dark brown shoes through years of wear.

How to use the Tarrago dark brown premium shoe polish

Thin layers, ten minutes of patience, then buff. That is the whole job.

  1. Brush the shoes down with a horsehair brush to remove all dust and grit, paying attention to the welt and the stitching.
  2. Take a small amount of polish onto a clean cotton cloth – genuinely less than you think you need.
  3. Work it evenly into the leather in small circles, panel by panel, keeping the layer thin throughout.
  4. Leave the shoes to stand for about ten minutes so the waxes can set properly.
  5. Buff with a dry cloth or a polishing brush until the shine comes up.
  6. For a high shine on the toe caps, keep adding tiny amounts with a soft cloth and a single drop of water, buffing each layer until the cloudiness clears and the gloss appears.

My tip from behind the counter

The drop of water is the whole trick and almost nobody uses it. Once you have two or three dry layers on the toe cap, wet a fingertip, touch it to the cloth, and keep buffing in small circles. The water stops the cloth dragging the wax off and lets you burnish it flat instead. Five minutes of that on each toe is the difference between shoes that look polished and shoes that stop people in the corridor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a polish and a shoe cream?

A cream is mostly about nourishment and colour, and gives a soft satin finish. A wax polish like this is about protection and gloss, and it builds a harder film on the surface. The classic routine is cream first to feed the leather, wax second to shine and protect it. This tin happens to do a good deal of both.

Will dark brown 06 match my shoes?

Dark brown 06 is the deep, cool chocolate brown that most dark brown dress shoes are made in. If your shoes are a warmer, redder brown, the medium brown 39 tin will be closer. As always, test on the inside of the heel counter before you commit to a whole toe cap.

Does a water-based polish work as well as a solvent one?

In my experience, yes, and it is significantly nicer to live with. The waxes are the same waxes; it is the carrier that differs. You lose the fumes and the stained hands, and you avoid the slow drying-out that repeated solvent use causes in the leather.
