Description

Slitesterk Horsehair Buffing Brush Neutral – Polishing Brush for Smooth Leather – the brush that turns cream into shine

Ask any shoemaker what separates a decent shine from a proper one and the answer is almost never the polish. It is the brush. This horsehair buffing brush is the tool that takes the cream you have just applied and works it into a deep, even, natural gloss, and it does so without scratching or dragging the leather.

The bristles are soft natural horsehair, which is fine enough to glide over a finished surface yet dense enough to generate the friction that brings up a shine. Synthetic bristles are harsher and tend to leave faint lines across a polished toe cap; horsehair simply does not. The light, undyed bristles are neutral, so this brush is safe on every colour from black brogues to cream trainers.

It is also the most useful brush in the box for day-to-day upkeep. Even without any polish at all, thirty seconds of buffing after a wet walk lifts dust out of the grain and revives the shine you already have, which means you reach for the tin far less often than you might think.

Why choose the Slitesterk Horsehair Buffing Brush?

  • Soft natural horsehair. Fine, dense bristles glide across finished leather and raise a shine without leaving scratch marks or drag lines.
  • Neutral for every colour. The undyed bristles carry no pigment, so one brush is safe across your whole rack from black to cream.
  • Spreads cream evenly. Buffing distributes any leftover polish into the grain, which prevents patchy build-up around the seams and the welt.
  • Revives shine without polish. A quick buff between polishes lifts dust and brings back gloss, so your shoes look cared for with almost no effort.
  • Comfortable, hard-wearing build. A solid wooden body with a well-shaped back sits properly in the hand and will outlast a great many tins of polish.

How to use the Slitesterk Horsehair Buffing Brush

  1. Apply your shoe cream or wax polish first and let it settle for ten to fifteen minutes.
  2. Hold the brush by its back with a relaxed wrist, keeping your hand close to the leather.
  3. Buff with quick, light strokes across the surface rather than slow, heavy ones. Speed builds the shine, pressure does not.
  4. Work panel by panel, giving extra passes to the toe cap and the heel counter where gloss shows most.
  5. Finish with a soft cloth if you want an even higher gloss on the toes.
  6. Between polishes, run the brush over the whole shoe for half a minute to lift dust and revive the existing shine.

My tip from behind the counter

Keep two brushes, not one, even when both are neutral. Dark polish residue builds up in the bristles over time and will eventually grey out a pale shoe. Mine are marked with a dab of paint on the handle, one for dark leathers and one for light, and after twenty years they are both still going strong. Comb them out occasionally with an old brush to keep them clean.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an application brush and a buffing brush?

An application brush is smaller and stiffer and is used to put cream onto the leather. This one is larger and softer, and its job is to work that cream in and raise the shine afterwards.

Can I use it on suede or nubuck?

No. Suede and nubuck need a dedicated crepe or brass suede brush to lift the nap. Horsehair is designed for finished smooth leather and will flatten a suede surface.

How do I clean the brush?

Comb the bristles through with another brush to shake out dried polish. If it becomes really clogged, wash it in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, then dry it bristles-down at room temperature.
