Slitesterk Colour Cream Black 102 – heavy pigment for shoes that have seen better days

Some shoes are past the point where an ordinary polish will help. The heel has been kicked, the toe has been scraped on a kerb, and the black has faded to a tired charcoal. That is exactly the job this cream was made for, and at £5.99 it is the cheapest rescue on the shelf.

Slitesterk Colour Cream is our own brand, and I had it made with a deliberately high pigment load. Ordinary shoe creams carry just enough colour to freshen a shade; this black colour cream carries enough to genuinely cover. Scratches, scuffs and patchy wear disappear under it, and the black comes back deep and even.

The clever part is that it manages to be opaque without looking painted. The pigment sinks into the leather and leaves a smooth, natural finish rather than a plastic-looking crust, so your shoes still look like leather when you have finished. It nourishes and protects the smooth leather at the same time.

A word on the name, since people often ask: Slitesterk is our own registered brand and the word is Norwegian for hard-wearing. That is the standard I hold the range to, and this little 30ml tube is one of the products I am most pleased with.

Why choose Slitesterk Colour Cream?

  • Extra pigment where you need it. This is a step up from a standard shoe cream. Deep scuffs on the heel and toe that a normal polish only greys over are covered properly here, in one or two coats.
  • It still looks like leather. The pigment penetrates rather than sitting in a film on the surface, so you get an even black finish with the grain still visible. No shiny plastic look.
  • It feeds while it covers. The formula conditions the smooth leather as it colours, which keeps the material supple and stops the newly restored areas drying out and cracking again.
  • A tube, not a tin. The 30ml tube lets you squeeze out exactly what you need with no waste and no drying out. It also fits in a drawer, a desk or a suitcase, which a tin of polish rarely does.
  • Works on shoes, boots and trainers. Black smooth leather is black smooth leather, whether it is on a brogue, an ankle boot or a leather trainer. It handles bags and belts just as well.
  • Honest value. At £5.99 it costs less than a sandwich and will restore several pairs. If you only buy one thing to rescue a tired black pair, make it this.

How to use Slitesterk Colour Cream

  1. Clean the shoes first with a brush and, if they are grubby, a leather cleaner. Let them dry naturally. The cream needs bare leather to grip, not a layer of old wax and city grime.
  2. Squeeze a small blob onto a soft cloth or a dauber brush. Start with less than you think you need, because this cream covers far more than a standard polish.
  3. Work it into the leather in small circular motions, covering the whole shoe evenly rather than dabbing only at the scuffs. Even coverage is what makes the repair invisible.
  4. Pay a little extra attention to the toe cap and the heel counter, building a second thin layer over the worst damage once the first has dried.
  5. Leave it for ten minutes, then buff up with a clean cloth or a polishing brush until you have an even, soft shine.

Because the pigment is heavy, let the cream dry fully before the shoes meet light-coloured trousers or a cream carpet. Once buffed and dry it will not transfer.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from an ordinary black shoe polish?

Pigment load. A standard polish is mostly about feeding and shine with a little colour; this is built to cover. If your shoes are simply dull, a polish is fine. If they are scratched and patchy, you want this.

Will it rub off on my socks or trousers?

Not once it is dry and buffed. Give it ten minutes and a proper buff with a cloth and the surface is stable. Wearing shoes while the cream is still wet is the only way to get transfer.

Can I use it on a leather bag or a belt?

Yes, on smooth leather it works the same way. Test a hidden area first, as some bag leathers carry a heavier factory finish that changes how the cream takes.

What does the name Slitesterk mean?

It is Norwegian for hard-wearing, and it is our own registered brand. We put our name on products we are happy to stand behind, which is why the pigment level here is higher than the usual own-label cream.
