Slitesterk Cognac Colour Cream 107 – 30ml Extra Opaque Leather Cream – heavy pigment for cognac shoes that have seen better days

Cognac is a beautiful shade and a cruel one, because every scrape shows. A kerb-scuffed toe or a kicked heel leaves a pale grey mark straight across the warm tan, and an ordinary polish only greys it over. This cognac colour cream was made for precisely that job, and at £5.99 it is the cheapest rescue on the shelf.

Slitesterk is our own brand, and I had this cream made with a deliberately high pigment load. A normal shoe cream carries just enough colour to freshen a shade; this carries enough to genuinely cover. Scratches, scuffs and patchy wear disappear under it and the cognac comes back warm and even.

The clever part is that it manages to be opaque without looking painted. The pigment sinks into the leather and leaves a smooth, natural finish rather than a plastic crust, so your shoes still look like leather when you have finished. It nourishes and protects the smooth leather at the same time, which is what stops the newly covered areas drying out again.

People often ask about the name, so: Slitesterk is our own registered trademark and the word is Norwegian for hard-wearing. That is the standard I hold the range to, and this little 30ml tube is one of the products I am most pleased with.

Why choose the Slitesterk Cognac Colour Cream?

  • Extra pigment where you need it – this is a clear step up from a standard shoe cream. Deep scuffs on the heel and the toe that a normal polish only dulls are covered properly here in one or two coats.
  • It still looks like leather – the pigment penetrates rather than sitting in a film on the surface, so you get an even cognac finish with the grain still visible and no shiny plastic look.
  • It feeds while it covers – the formula conditions the smooth leather as it colours, which keeps the material supple and stops the restored areas cracking again in a few months.
  • A tube, not a tin – the 30ml tube lets you squeeze out exactly what you need with no waste and nothing drying out. It also fits in a desk drawer or a suitcase, which a tin of polish rarely does.
  • Honest value at £5.99 – it costs less than a sandwich and will restore several pairs. If you buy one thing to rescue a tired cognac pair, make it this.

How to use the Slitesterk Cognac Colour Cream

  1. Clean the shoes first with a brush and, if they are grubby, a leather cleaner. Let them dry naturally. The cream needs bare leather to grip, not old wax and city grime.
  2. Squeeze a small blob onto a soft cloth or a dauber brush. Start with less than you think you need, because this covers far more than a standard polish.
  3. Work it into the leather in small circles, covering the whole shoe evenly rather than dabbing only at the scuffs. Even coverage is what makes the repair invisible.
  4. Give the toe cap and the heel counter a little extra attention, building a second thin layer over the worst damage once the first has dried.
  5. Leave it for about ten minutes, then buff up with a clean cloth or a polishing brush until you have an even, soft shine.
  6. Let the cream dry fully before the shoes meet pale trousers or a cream carpet. Once buffed and dry it will not transfer.

My tip from behind the counter

Do the whole shoe, not just the scuff. I know it is tempting to dab at the one bad patch and stop, but a covered patch surrounded by faded leather is more obvious than the original scratch was. Two minutes more work across the whole upper and nobody will ever know the shoe was damaged.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from an ordinary cognac shoe polish?

Pigment load. A standard polish is mostly about feeding and shine with a little colour; this is built to cover. If your shoes are simply dull, a polish is fine. If they are scratched and patchy, you want this.

Will it rub off on my socks or trousers?

Not once it is dry and buffed. Give it ten minutes and a proper buff with a cloth and the surface is stable. Wearing the shoes while the cream is still wet is the only way to get transfer.

What does the name Slitesterk mean?

It is Norwegian for hard-wearing, and it is our own registered brand. We only put our name on products we are happy to stand behind, which is why the pigment level here is higher than a usual own-label cream.
