Slitesterk Black Shoe Polish 102 – 50ml Beeswax and Carnauba Polish – real food for black leather

Black shoes are the ones you wear the most and, if I am honest, the ones that get the least thought. Most people reach for whatever tin is at the back of the cupboard, rub a bit on and hope for the best. The trouble is that a lot of cheap black polish is mostly filler and pigment: it paints the surface, hides nothing for long and does very little for the hide underneath.

This is our own answer to that. Slitesterk is the line we make ourselves, and with this polish we set out to build something ecological that did not skimp on the ingredients most brands quietly leave out. We brought back old-fashioned beeswax, added carnauba wax for the shine, and kept everything else simple so the price could stay sensible. It arrives in a 50ml glass flask with an iron lid, which is a far nicer thing to keep on the shelf than a thin pressed tin.

The result is a polish that soaks into black leather rather than sitting on top of it. The leather drinks, the water beads, and the black comes back with depth.

Why choose the Slitesterk Black Shoe Polish?

  • Beeswax that actually feeds the leather. Beeswax is the ingredient most budget polishes cut first because it costs money. It sinks into the fibres, keeps the hide supple and helps stop the creases across the vamp turning into cracks.
  • Carnauba wax for a shine that lasts. Carnauba is the hardest natural wax there is. Buff it and you get a genuine glow that holds for days rather than a gloss that dulls the first time you walk to the station in the rain.
  • Proper black pigment, not a grey compromise. The 102 black is pigmented deeply enough to cover scuffs on toe caps and heel counters. Neutral polish leaves those marks pale; this one puts the colour back where it has been walked off.
  • Water and dirt run off instead of soaking in. Once the wax film is buffed, rain sits on the surface in beads and street grime brushes off. That is the single cheapest thing you can do to make a pair of shoes last another winter.
  • Ecological, without the usual trade-off. The formula leans on natural waxes, yet it still performs like a traditional polish, which is the part most green alternatives get wrong.
  • A 50ml glass flask that lasts and lasts. You only need a smear per shoe, so one flask will see you through dozens of polishing sessions. At £6.99 that works out at pennies per shine.

How to use Slitesterk Black Shoe Polish 102

  1. Brush the shoes down with a horsehair brush to lift off sand, dust and dried mud. Polish over grit just grinds it into the leather.
  2. Unscrew the iron lid and take a small smear of polish on a soft cotton cloth wrapped around two fingers. Less than you think is plenty.
  3. Work it into the leather in small circles, panel by panel, keeping the coat thin and even. Pay extra attention to the toe cap, the heel and the flex creases.
  4. Do not forget the welt and the edge of the sole; a black polished edge is what makes a shoe look properly cared for rather than merely clean.
  5. Leave the shoes for ten to fifteen minutes so the waxes can settle and the solvents flash off. Warm room, no radiator.
  6. Buff briskly with a clean horsehair brush and finish with a dry cloth or a soft duster until the black comes up with a deep, even shine.

My tip from behind the counter

If you want a real mirror on the toe cap, do not pile on more polish. Build two or three whisper-thin coats, buffing between each, and on the last one add a single drop of water to the cloth and keep working in tiny circles until the haze lifts. Five patient minutes, and it looks like an hour of work.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I use this black shoe polish?

For shoes you wear a couple of times a week, a proper polish every two or three weeks is plenty, with a quick brush after each wear in between. Boots that live outdoors want it more often, roughly once a fortnight through a wet British winter. You are feeding the leather, not painting it, so regular thin coats beat an occasional thick one every time.

Will it cover scuffs and worn toe caps?

Yes, within reason. The pigment load in 102 black is high enough to hide grey scuffs, bag rub and the pale patches that appear on toe caps and heels. If the leather is actually cut or the finish has gone completely, a polish will not rebuild it; you would want a leather paint for that, and I am happy to point you to the right one.

Can I use it on black boots and leather bags too?

Absolutely. Anything in finished smooth leather is fair game, so black work boots, Chelsea boots, briefcases, belts and bag handles all respond well. Keep it away from suede, nubuck and oiled matt leathers, and do a small test on the inside of a strap if you are treating a bag for the first time.

  9. Gerard Van Heerwaarde (verified owner) –

Good shoe polish that does its job well. Polish it in, wait a bit and buff it off. Tried it instead of Kiwi and Saphir for a change. Oddly enough, I had a less good experience with the cognac colour from the own brand. It stayed greasy and I couldn’t polish it to a shine.

    Works well, covers well.
