Shoeboy’s Shoe Cream Pot Hazel 088 – a solvent-free German cream in a 50ml glass jar
Hazel is that lovely light golden-brown you find on summer brogues, loafers and desert boots – and it is a shade that shows every scuff. Shoeboy’s Shoe Cream Pot in 088 Hazel is the answer: a premium pigmented cream, made in Germany, that feeds the leather and puts the warmth back into the colour.
Shoeboy’s build this cream around beeswax and other refined waxes, a colour intensifier, care agents and a waterproofing agent. In practice that means it does three things in one pass: it hydrates the leather so it does not dry out and crack, it freshens the shade, and it leaves the surface better able to shrug off a shower.
It is also solvent-free, which is worth paying attention to if you polish often. Solvents thin a cream and make it easy to spread, but over years they draw the natural oils out of good leather. Leaving them out is the more expensive way to make a shoe cream and the kinder one for your shoes.
You get 50ml in a proper glass jar, which keeps the cream in condition far better than plastic. Use it with a cloth or a dauber brush on smooth leather shoes, boots, bags and belts – anything in that hazel-to-tan family that has gone a little flat.
Why choose hazel shoe cream?
- A pigmented cream for a difficult shade. Hazel sits between tan and mid brown. Shoeboy’s mix it as its own colour, so faded toes come back golden rather than muddy.
- Beeswax plus refined waxes. The wax blend nourishes the leather and buffs to a warm shine that lasts more than a day.
- Colour intensifier in the formula. It is not simply pigment in wax – Shoeboy’s add an intensifier so the existing colour is lifted as well as topped up.
- Water repellency built in. A waterproofing agent in the cream means every polish also adds a little protection against rain and dirt.
- Solvent-free. Kinder to fine leather over the long term, and noticeably less smelly to work with than solvent-based polishes.
- 50ml glass jar. Glass keeps the cream from drying out, and 50ml is enough for years of regular care on one or two pairs.
How to use hazel shoe cream
- Brush the shoes down and wipe off any grime with a barely damp cloth, then let the leather dry fully.
- If the shoes have a build-up of old polish, strip it back with a leather cleaner first so the new cream can be absorbed.
- Take a small amount of cream on a soft cloth or a dauber brush.
- Work it into the leather in circular movements, keeping the coat thin and giving the toe cap and heel edges an extra pass.
- Leave the cream to be absorbed for around 15 minutes.
- Buff with a horsehair polishing brush, then finish with a soft cloth. Add a second thin coat if the colour still looks tired.

Frequently asked questions
Is hazel the same as cognac or tan?
They are close cousins. Hazel is a touch lighter and more golden than cognac and slightly warmer than a neutral tan. If your leather sits between the two, hazel is usually the safer choice, because a cream that is a shade lighter blends in while one that is too dark stands out.
Do I need to use a separate waterproofing spray as well?
The cream contains a water-repelling agent, which is plenty for everyday town wear. If your shoes are going out in real rain, add a protector spray once the cream is dry and buffed – belt and braces, and it costs you two minutes.
