Saphir Tenax Leather Spray Paint in Hermès — give smooth leather a fresh, even colour
If your favourite leather shoes have faded, scuffed or you simply fancy a new look, Saphir Tenax is the spray paint I reach for. It lays down a strong, even layer of colour on smooth (pigmented) leather, so you can refresh tired shoes and boots or change their colour altogether. This 150ml aerosol in the warm Hermès shade is made in France by Saphir, a name trusted by shoemakers and shoe shiners the world over.
Because it sprays on rather than being brushed in, Tenax is quick, controllable and forgiving. Once dry it resists water and rubbing, so the colour stays put through everyday wear. I love it for reviving smooth leather trainers, brogues, boots and even bags and small leather accessories.
The secret to a professional result is patience: several thin coats always beat one heavy one. Thin layers dry evenly, avoid runs and drips, and build up to a smooth, hard-wearing finish that looks like it came straight from the shoemaker. Hermès is a warm, tan-brown shade that suits cognac and light-brown leather especially well, and it blends in beautifully where the original colour has worn thin at the toes and creases.
Why choose Saphir Tenax?
- Excellent coverage — a couple of thin passes give a full, uniform colour that hides scuffs and fading on smooth leather.
- Water and friction resistant — once cured, the finish shrugs off rain and everyday rubbing so the colour lasts.
- Fast and easy — the fine aerosol mist means no brush marks and even, professional-looking results in minutes.
- Versatile — perfect for shoes and boots, and equally at home on leather bags, jackets and accessories.
- Saphir quality — French-made shoe care that leather lovers rely on for a dependable, lasting result.
How to use Saphir Tenax
- Clean the leather first and remove any old wax or grease with a leather cleaner, then let it dry.
- Mask off soles, laces and any areas you do not want to colour.
- Shake the can well for around a minute so the pigment mixes properly.
- Hold the can roughly 20cm away and apply in thin, even passes, letting each coat dry before the next.
- Leave to dry fully, then buff gently and finish with a matching cream or wax if you like extra shine.

A tip from me
Before you spray the whole shoe, test the colour on a hidden spot such as the inside of the tongue or heel. Hermès reads warmer on pale leather and richer on darker leather, so a quick test tells you exactly how it will land — and saves any surprises on your favourite pair.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Saphir Tenax on suede or nubuck?
No — Tenax is made for smooth, pigmented leather. For suede and nubuck I would point you towards a dedicated suede dye instead.
Will it change the colour of my shoes completely?
Yes, with good coverage Tenax can take leather to a darker or different shade. Going much lighter is trickier, so it works best when moving to a similar or darker colour.
How long does it take to dry?
Each thin coat dries in around 15–20 minutes. I would leave the shoes overnight before wearing them so the finish cures fully.
Can I use Tenax on leather bags and jackets?
Absolutely. Because the finish stays flexible once cured, it works well on smooth leather bags, jackets and accessories as well as shoes and boots.
