Description
Saphir Teinture Française Penetrating Suede Dye – Blue (23) – 50ml – an alcohol-based dye that soaks deep into suede, nubuck and smooth leather for a rich, permanent blue.
Hello, Haico here. Teinture Française is one of the cleverest little bottles on my shelf. Unlike a surface spray, this is a penetrating, alcohol-based leather dye that sinks right into the fibres of the leather – which is exactly why it works so beautifully on suede, nubuck and velvety leathers as well as porous smooth leather. This rich base blue (23) revives faded blue suede beautifully and can also be used to deepen or recolour smooth leather with plenty of character.
Because the colour penetrates rather than sitting on the surface, you get a natural, long-lasting result that moves with the leather and doesn’t flake. It’s brilliant for taking a pair from light to dark, refreshing a tired colour, or covering stains and water marks that ordinary cleaning simply won’t shift. Each 50ml bottle of this suede dye is plenty for several pairs, and it comes with an applicator to help you work the blue in evenly.
Why choose Teinture Française in blue?
- Penetrates deep. The alcohol base carries the pigment into the leather fibres for a colour that lasts and won’t crack or peel off the surface.
- Works on suede and smooth leather. One dye for suede, nubuck, velvety leathers and porous smooth leather – rare, and hugely useful.
- Rich, buildable blue. Apply thin coats to control the depth of colour, taking your shoes from light to dark exactly as far as you want.
- Hides stains and marks. Ideal for covering water marks, salt stains and patchy fading that cleaning alone can’t fix.
- Made in France by Saphir. Part of Saphir’s celebrated Beauté du Cuir range, trusted by cobblers and shoe lovers worldwide.
How to use Saphir Teinture Française
- Clean the leather first. For suede, brush away dust with a crepe brush and lift stubborn marks with a suede eraser; for smooth leather, wipe clean and let it dry fully.
- Stir or shake the bottle well so the pigment is evenly mixed.
- Using the applicator or a gloved hand, apply the dye in small circular motions, working it in evenly.
- Build the colour with several thin coats, letting each one dry before adding the next – this gives a far more even result than one heavy coat.
- Stuff the shoes with newspaper to hold their shape and leave to dry for around 12 hours.
- For suede, finish by brushing the nap back up with a crepe brush; for smooth leather, seal with a matching cream or wax polish.

Frequently asked questions
Can Teinture Française really be used on suede?
Yes – that’s where it shines. Because it penetrates the fibres rather than coating the surface, it recolours suede and nubuck without leaving a stiff film. Just brush the nap back up once it’s dry.
Can I make my shoes a darker colour?
Absolutely. Teinture Française is designed to take leather from light to dark. Build the shade gradually with thin coats until you reach the depth of colour you’re after.
How long does it take to dry?
Allow roughly 12 hours for the dye to dry and cure fully. Stuffing the shoes with newspaper while they dry helps them keep their shape and absorbs any excess.

Monique Greveling –
It was easy to apply to a suede shoe, but although the shoes themselves were a true light blue, they turned darker. Still a nice colour, but the dye is darker than shown in the picture.

Good, nice and dark. A bit streaky on a lighter surface (probably down to the latter)
