Description
Saphir Teinture Française Penetrating Leather and Suede Dye – an alcohol-based penetrating dye in red
When you genuinely want to change or restore the colour of your leather, this is the dye I trust. Saphir Teinture Française is an alcohol-based penetrating dye that soaks deep into the material rather than sitting on the surface, giving you a permanent, even result. This 50ml bottle comes in a vivid red.
It works on both smooth leather and suede, which makes it wonderfully versatile. Because it is alcohol-based, it penetrates leather with minimal porosity and bonds properly with the fibres, so the new colour looks natural and lasts.
One thing worth knowing: this dye is designed to darken lighter shades. You can take a light shoe to a deeper tone, but you cannot lighten a dark one. And because all the shades in the range are fully mixable, you can blend your own custom colours.
The handy ball-tipped applicator brush makes it easy to spread the dye evenly, so even if it is your first time, you can achieve a professional finish at home.
Why choose Saphir Teinture Française?
- Penetrates deeply. The alcohol base carries the pigment right into the leather for a permanent, hard-wearing colour that will not simply rub off.
- Works on leather and suede. One bottle covers both smooth leather and suede, so it is a genuinely flexible way to restore or recolour.
- Fully mixable shades. Every colour in the range blends together, so you can create the exact tone you are after.
- Even, professional finish. The built-in ball applicator lets you spread the dye smoothly and reach into seams and edges.
- Restores tired colour. Perfect for bringing faded shoes, boots and bags back to life or giving them a whole new look.
- A little goes a long way. 50ml is enough to treat several pairs, and any left over stays usable for future projects.
How to use Saphir Teinture Française
Dyeing your own leather is easier than it looks. Take your time and work in thin coats:
- Clean the leather thoroughly and let it dry so the dye can penetrate evenly.
- For smooth leather, remove any wax or old polish with a leather cleaner first.
- Apply a thin, even coat of dye with the ball applicator, working in one direction.
- Let it dry, then build up the colour with further thin coats until you reach the shade you want.
- Once fully dry, finish smooth leather with a shoe cream or wax; brush suede up with a suede brush.

A tip from me
Always test the colour on a hidden area first, and build it up gradually. Two or three thin coats give you a far more even, natural finish than one heavy coat – and you stay in full control of the final shade.
Frequently asked questions
Can I lighten my shoes with this dye?
No. Teinture Française is a darkening dye, so it takes lighter leather to a deeper tone. You cannot make a dark shoe lighter with it.
Do I need to seal the leather afterwards?
For smooth leather, yes – finish with a shoe cream or wax to protect the colour and add shine. For suede, simply brush it up once dry to restore the nap.
Will the colour rub off on my socks or clothes?
Once the dye has fully dried and, for smooth leather, been sealed with cream or wax, it is colourfast. Allow plenty of drying time before wearing.

The shoe goes from light pink to dark pink. One pot of dye is only enough for one coat (on open shoes/court shoes). Shame this wasn’t in the description. So for several coats you really need at least three pots.

Thanks for your feedback. It’s very hard to estimate how much dye is needed. It depends on things like the thickness. But also on how well it’s been looked after, dried-out leather soaks up more dye than nourished leather.
