Saphir Rénovétine Spray Colourless 200ml – Suede and Nubuck Care Spray – the neutral spray that feeds suede without changing its colour

Suede and nubuck need feeding just as much as smooth leather does, but the products that do it are far less obvious. Left alone, the nap goes flat and dusty, the colour turns patchy and the surface soaks up every drop of rain. Rénovétine is Saphir’s answer, and the colourless version is the one I recommend when you would rather not touch the existing shade at all.

It is enriched with sweet almond oil, which is what separates it from a plain waterproofing spray. The oil nourishes the fibres so they stay soft and lift back up when you brush them, while the rest of the formula adds water and stain repellency. The result is suede that still looks and feels like suede: matte, velvety and even, rather than stiff and shiny.

Because there is no pigment, it is the safe choice for pale grey, sand, taupe and unusual shades where a coloured spray risks going wrong, and for two-tone or mixed-material shoes where overspray onto a lighter panel would be a disaster. It is equally at home on suede boots, nubuck trainers, bags and jackets, and Saphir list it as suitable for many textile and technical fabrics too.

One thing worth being straight about: colourless will not bring back colour that has genuinely faded away. It revives what is there and protects it. If your navy suede boots have gone grey at the toes, you want a matching coloured Rénovétine instead, and I am happy to help you pick the shade.

Why choose Saphir Rénovétine Spray Colourless 200ml?

  • Sweet almond oil feeds the fibres. This is a care product, not just a barrier. The oil keeps the nap soft so it brushes up velvety instead of staying flat and tired.
  • Completely neutral. With no pigment there is nothing to go wrong on pale, unusual or two-tone shoes, and nothing to rub off onto socks or trouser hems.
  • It adds water and stain repellency. Rain beads up instead of soaking straight in, which buys you time to blot a shower before it becomes a tidemark.
  • It keeps the matte, velvety finish. Applied properly it revives the texture rather than flattening it, so suede still looks like suede rather than something plasticised.
  • Good on more than shoes. Use it on suede and nubuck boots, trainers, bags, gloves and jackets, and on many textile and technical materials.
  • Saphir quality from Avel in France. Saphir have been making leather care since 1925 and Rénovétine is one of the sprays professional cobblers keep on the bench.

How to use Saphir Rénovétine Spray Colourless 200ml

  1. Brush the suede all over with a suede brush first to lift the nap and remove dust. Anything left on the surface will be sealed in.
  2. Shake the can well, then spray evenly from about 30cm away, keeping the can moving so no area gets soaked.
  3. Aim for a light, even mist rather than a wet coat. Two thin passes are much better than one heavy one.
  4. Leave the shoes to dry naturally for about ten minutes, away from radiators and direct sun.
  5. Brush the nap again once dry to bring back the silky, even texture, and repeat the whole process every few weeks or after heavy rain.

Frequently asked questions

Will the colourless version darken my suede?

It can look very slightly deeper while it is damp, but it dries back to the original shade. That is the whole point of the neutral version. Even so, I always suggest a quick test on a hidden area such as the inside of the heel before you spray a whole pair, particularly on very pale suede.

Should I choose colourless or a matching colour?

Choose colourless when the colour is still good and you want care and protection without any risk. Choose a matching shade when the suede has genuinely faded or gone patchy, because only pigment will put lost colour back. If in doubt, start with colourless and see how much the brushing alone improves things.

How is this different from a plain waterproofing spray?

A waterproofing spray only builds a barrier. Rénovétine feeds the fibres with almond oil at the same time, so the suede stays soft and the nap keeps its texture. On shoes you actually care about, that difference shows after a season or two.

How often should I use it?

For suede worn through a British autumn, every three or four weeks is sensible, plus a fresh coat after any real soaking. Brushing between treatments does half the work, so keep a suede brush by the door.
