Navy suede is beautiful for exactly one season, and then the toes go grey and the nap flattens. This marine suede renovator spray is how you get the colour back. Saphir build it on almond oil, so it cleans and feeds the fibres as it recolours, and it leaves suede and nubuck with their proper matte, silky handle rather than a stiff painted crust.

One 200ml aerosol will recolour a pair of shoes several times over. It works on suede, nubuck and textile, which makes it just as useful for a navy suede bag or a pair of desert boots as it is for shoes. How to use Saphir Rénovétine Marine 06

Ten minutes of drying is the only patience this asks of you.

1. Brush the suede thoroughly with a crepe or brass suede brush to lift the nap and remove all dust.
2. Treat any greasy marks with a suede cleaner and let the shoes dry completely.
3. Test the spray on a hidden area — the inside of the heel — and let it dry before you judge the shade.
4. Shake the aerosol well, then spray evenly from around 30cm away. Keep the can moving and do not soak the leather.
5. Leave the shoes to dry for about ten minutes, away from direct heat.
6. Brush the nap up with a suede brush to restore the silky feel. Apply a second light coat if the colour is still patchy.

Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated room, and mask off any smooth leather trim, soles or metal fittings before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Will it stiffen the suede?

No. The almond oil base is specifically there to prevent that. Brush the nap up once the spray has dried and the suede feels soft and velvety again.

Is marine the same as dark blue?

Marine 06 is a classic navy — deeper than a mid blue, cooler than an ink blue. If your shoes are a bright or royal blue, this will darken them noticeably, so test first.

Can I use it on a suede jacket?

On suede clothing it can work well, but treat it with more care than footwear: test on an inside seam, apply light coats and let each one dry fully. Very large panels are easier to keep even if you work in sections.
