Description
Saphir Médaille d’Or Pommadier Paris Brown 910 – seven waxes, mink oil and shea butter in one jar
If you only ever buy one really good cream polish, make it this one. Saphir’s Médaille d’Or Pommadier is, by common consent among people who care about shoes, the finest cream polish made anywhere – and shade 910 is its warm, mid-toned paris brown shoe cream.
Paris Brown, which you will also see written as Parisian Brown, is a rounded medium brown with a touch of red in it. It suits the classic English and French dress shoe beautifully: not the yellowish tan of a country boot, not the cold dark brown of a work shoe, but the elegant middle brown that patinates so well over the years.
The formula is what sets the Médaille d’Or line apart. Saphir blend seven waxes – beeswax, carnauba and montan among them – with shea butter oil, mink oil and genuine pine turpentine. There is no water in it and no silicone at all, which is why it feeds so deeply and why the finish looks like leather rather than lacquer.
You get a 75ml glass jar. It is not the cheapest cream on the shelf, and it does not need to be: because it is so concentrated you use very little, and one jar will comfortably outlast several pairs of shoes.
Why choose this Saphir paris brown shoe cream?
- Seven waxes in one cream. Beeswax, carnauba, montan and four others, each doing a different job – feeding, protecting, building shine. It is the depth of the blend that gives the Pommadier its reputation.
- Mink oil and shea butter feed deeply. These are the ingredients that go past the surface and keep the fibres of the leather supple, which is what actually extends the life of a good shoe.
- No water, no silicone. Nothing in the jar seals the leather shut. The hide keeps breathing, later treatments still take, and the patina builds properly over the years.
- A transparent, buildable tint. The pigment is fine enough to let the character of the leather show through. Use it once for a light refresh, or build several coats to deepen a faded brown.
- A little goes a very long way. A pea-sized amount does a whole shoe. At 75ml, this jar will still be going strong long after cheaper creams have been thrown away.
- The Médaille d’Or standard. This is Saphir’s top line, made in France for the shoemakers and repairers who cannot afford to get it wrong. If you have invested in good shoes, feed them properly.
How to use Saphir Pommadier 910
- Remove the laces and brush the shoes thoroughly with a horsehair brush. Insert shoe trees if you have them – a taut upper is far easier to work on.
- Clean the leather with a gentle leather cleaner to lift old wax and grime, then let it dry.
- Take a very small amount of cream on a cotton cloth wrapped round two fingers, or on a dauber brush.
- Work it into the leather in small circles, covering the whole upper evenly and giving extra attention to the flex creases.
- Leave the cream to feed for at least fifteen to twenty minutes. With this cream, patience is genuinely part of the method.
- Brush it out with a horsehair brush, then finish with a soft cloth for a deep, warm glow.
For a proper mirror finish, follow with Saphir’s Pâte de Luxe wax on the toe and heel once the cream has dried. Cream feeds and colours, wax shines – keep those two jobs separate and your shoes will look after themselves.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Pommadier different from an ordinary shoe cream?
Two things: the number of waxes and the quality of the oils. Most creams use one or two waxes and a mineral oil. The Pommadier uses seven waxes with mink oil and shea butter and no water at all, which is why it feeds so much deeper and why the shine has that soft depth to it.
Will Paris Brown match my mid-brown shoes?
In most cases yes – it is a warm medium brown with a red note, which is the classic dress-shoe brown. As with any cream, test it on the inside of the heel first. Creams tint rather than paint, so the existing colour of your leather always shows through a little.
