Saphir Médaille d’Or Mirror Gloss Wax — the final step to a glass-like mirror shine
If you have ever admired a pair of dress shoes with a toe so shiny you can almost see your reflection in it, this little pot is the secret. Saphir Médaille d’Or Mirror Gloss is a high-shine finishing wax, made in France, that professional shoe shiners and bootmakers reach for when they want that famous glaçage, or mirror, finish.
It is blended from naturally glossy hard waxes, including beeswax, carnauba and montan wax. Those waxes build up in thin layers on the surface of the leather and, once buffed, reflect the light beautifully. I want to be clear about one thing: Mirror Gloss is not a nourishing shoe cream. It has no conditioning properties, so it is meant purely for the finish. Always feed and polish your shoes with a shoe cream or Pâte de Luxe first, then use Mirror Gloss on the toe and heel to take the shine to the next level.
Why choose Mirror Gloss?
- A true mirror finish. The high wax content lets you build a deep, glass-like gloss on the toe cap and heel counter that ordinary polish simply cannot match.
- Faster and easier. Mirror Gloss is formulated to dry quicker than a standard wax polish, so you reach that high shine in less time and with less effort.
- Trusted by professionals. This is the same wax used by bootmakers and competition shoe shiners around the world, now on your own dressing table.
- A little goes a long way. You only apply the tiniest amount at a time, so a single 75ml pot will finish countless pairs before it runs low.
- Made by Saphir. A French house founded in 1920 and recognised in over 50 countries for the quality of its leather and shoe care.
How to use Mirror Gloss
- Start with clean, polished shoes. If there is old wax or dirt on the leather, clean it back first (Saphir Réno’Mat is ideal) and feed the leather with a shoe cream.
- Wrap a soft cotton cloth tightly around your first two fingers and pick up the smallest amount of Mirror Gloss.
- Using light pressure, work the wax into the toe and heel in small, circular motions.
- Add a single drop of water to the cloth and keep buffing in circles — the water helps the wax lay down smoothly and lifts the shine.
- Let each layer dry for a minute or two, then repeat. Several thin layers give a far better result than one thick one.
- Finish by buffing with a clean part of the cloth or a polishing glove until the surface gleams.
Haico’s tip: Patience is everything here. Two or three thin, well-buffed layers will always beat one heavy coat. And remember to keep the very edge of the toe cap flat when you buff — that is where the sharpest reflection lives.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Mirror Gloss and Pâte de Luxe?
Pâte de Luxe is a wax-rich shoe polish that both cares for and shines the whole shoe. Mirror Gloss is purely a finishing wax for the toe and heel, giving a much higher, sharper shine. Many people use Pâte de Luxe all over, then Mirror Gloss on the toe.
Can I use Mirror Gloss on suede or nubuck?
No. Mirror Gloss is only for smooth, finished leather. It would ruin the soft nap of suede or nubuck.
Does it come in different colours?
Mirror Gloss is used as a clear finishing layer over your polished shoes, so it works over any colour of leather.
