Description
Saphir Médaille d’Or Bordeaux Cream Polish 08 – Pommadier 100ml – the famous Pommadier cream, in the larger 100ml jar
If you own a pair of burgundy or oxblood shoes, this is the jar to have on the shelf. Saphir Médaille d’Or Pommadier, officially called Crème 1925, is the cream that most people who take shoes seriously come back to, and bordeaux 08 is the shade that suits wine, burgundy and oxblood calf.
The formula blends seven waxes, beeswax, carnauba and montan among them, with shea butter oil and turpentine spirit to carry them into the leather. There are no silicones and no synthetic shortcuts. That matters more than it sounds: silicone builds an invisible barrier, and once it is there the leather stops taking anything else you put on it.
What you get on the shoe is a soft satin glow rather than a hard gloss, with the colour lifted back into the creases and the scuffed places. It feeds the leather at the same time, so an upper that has gone dry and papery softens up over two or three applications. On good calf leather the difference after one session is obvious.
This is the 100ml jar rather than the more common 75ml, which is the sensible buy if you already know you like the cream. It is the same Pommadier in a larger pot, so the price per millilitre is lower and you are not back for another one in six months. Made in France by Avel, who have been at it since 1920.
Why choose Saphir Pommadier Bordeaux?
- Seven natural waxes: Beeswax, carnauba and montan among them, chosen to nourish and soften as well as shine, rather than just coating the surface.
- Pigment where you need it: The colour goes into the creases and the worn edges, so a tired burgundy upper looks even again instead of patchy.
- No silicone: The leather keeps breathing and still accepts wax polish or conditioner later. Silicone-based products close that door.
- The larger 100ml jar: Same cream as the 75ml, better value per millilitre, and enough in the pot to last years of regular use.
- Bordeaux 08 for wine and oxblood: It sits properly against burgundy calf, where a general dark brown or black would kill the colour.
- A good base under a high shine: Cream first for the feed and the colour, wax on the toe cap afterwards if you want a mirror. This is the right first layer.
How to use Saphir Pommadier Bordeaux
- Take the laces out and brush the shoes down thoroughly. Grit left in the welt will be ground into the leather as you work, and laces get in the way of a neat edge.
- Clean and condition first if the leather is dirty or dry, with a lotion or a renovator, and let it dry. Cream works far better on a clean surface.
- Pick up a small amount on a soft cloth wrapped over your fingers, or on a dauber brush. A jar this size tempts you to take too much; resist it.
- Work the cream in with small circular movements, thin and even, covering the whole panel and pressing a little more into the flex creases.
- Leave the shoes to rest for about fifteen minutes. This is where the waxes settle in and the pigment does its work, and it cannot be hurried.
- Buff with a horsehair brush and finish with a soft cloth. If you want a mirror on the toe cap, that is the moment to add a wax polish on top.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 100ml jar the same cream as the 75ml?
Yes, identical cream, simply a larger pot. The 75ml is the size most retailers stock and the one to try first. Once you know Pommadier is your cream, the 100ml is the better buy: fewer pounds per millilitre and a jar that will keep a couple of pairs going for years, because you are using a fingertip at a time.
Cream or wax polish, which comes first?
Cream first, always. It carries the pigment and the nourishment into the leather, and it needs an open surface to do that. Wax polish goes on afterwards, mainly on the toe cap and the heel, to build the glassy shine. Wax first would simply seal the leather and stop the cream getting in.
