Saphir Juvacuir 05 Dark Brown – 75ml Recolouring Cream for damage a shoe cream cannot hide
There is a point where an ordinary shoe cream simply gives up. A scraped toe on a dark brown brogue, a pale scratch across the flap of a briefcase, a bag handle rubbed back to the raw hide underneath – you can polish all evening and the mark still stares back at you. That is the moment for this dark brown leather recolouring cream. Juvacuir is not a cream that tints; it is a recolourant that covers.
Saphir have been making leather care in France since 1920, and Juvacuir is the bottle they reach for when leather needs putting right rather than merely feeding. It is fluid rather than buttery, heavily loaded with paste pigments and enriched with beeswax, montan wax and lanolin, so it lays down colour without leaving a thick crust on the surface. Shade 05 is a true dark brown – the deep, slightly cool chocolate that most dark brown shoes, boots and bags are finished in.
Because it flows, it is as much at home on a jacket, a holdall or a sofa cushion as on a shoe, and it does not stain or transfer once dry and buffed. Smooth leather only, though – suede and nubuck need a napped-leather product instead.
Why choose Saphir Juvacuir 05 Dark Brown?
- It covers instead of tinting. A shoe cream sits translucent, so a scratch shows straight through it. Juvacuir carries so much pigment that the damage disappears under it. That is the whole difference between disguising a mark and actually removing it from view.
- Dark brown 05 is the everyday dark brown. It matches the deep chocolate tone used on the majority of dark brown Oxfords, Derbys, Chelsea boots and leather holdalls, so in most cases you can use it straight from the bottle with no mixing at all.
- The shades blend freely. If your leather sits between two standard tones, mix a little dark brown with a lighter Juvacuir shade on a saucer and work towards an exact match. Very few recolourants let you do that.
- It is fluid, so it suits big surfaces. Jackets, bags, luggage, car seats and leather furniture are all fair game. A thick cream drags and leaves ridges on a large panel; this one spreads thinly and evenly.
- It stays flexible and does not crack. The wax and lanolin content keeps the film supple, so it moves with the leather at the vamp creases rather than flaking off where the shoe bends.
How to use Saphir Juvacuir 05 Dark Brown
- Brush the item down and clean it properly first. Old wax and silicone stop the pigment gripping, so a wipe with a leather cleaner is time well spent on anything that has been polished before.
- Shake the bottle firmly. The pigments settle, and an unshaken bottle gives you a weak, patchy first coat.
- Decant a little onto a soft cloth or a small sponge rather than working straight from the neck, so you control how much goes on.
- Apply a thin, even coat over the whole panel – not just the scuff. Blending across the full surface is what makes a repair invisible.
- Let it dry for about fifteen minutes at room temperature, well away from radiators.
- Buff with a clean, dry cloth. If the old damage still whispers through, add a second thin coat rather than one heavy one.
- Finish with a matching dark brown shoe cream or wax polish once the recolourant is fully dry, to seal the job and put the shine back.
My tip: always test on a hidden panel first
I test every recolourant on the inside of the heel or under a bag flap before I touch the visible leather – two minutes that has saved me more than once. Dark brown looks slightly deeper while wet and lifts a shade as it dries, so judge the match only when the test patch is completely dry. And go thin: two whisper-thin coats always beat one generous one, because a heavy coat is what makes leather look painted rather than repaired.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a dark brown shoe cream?
Opacity, and very little else. A cream feeds the leather and adds a translucent film of colour, so a scratch keeps showing through. Juvacuir covers the old surface completely, which is why it can hide a scrape rather than merely darken it. Most of my customers own both and use them for different jobs: cream for weekly care, Juvacuir for damage.
Will dark brown 05 rub off onto my socks or trousers?
Not once it has dried properly and been buffed. Give it the full fifteen minutes, buff off every trace of surplus with a dry cloth, and seal it with a shoe cream. Transfer only happens when a thick coat is put on and the item is worn before it has cured.
Can I use it on suede or nubuck boots?
No. This is made for smooth leather, and on napped leather it would glue the nap flat and leave a shiny patch. For suede and nubuck you want a suede renovator spray or a suede dye, both of which colour the fibres without sealing them together.

This covers well after dyeing the boots, I did think it was necessary to order it as well for the finish
