Saphir Grey Leather Cream 14 – Canadian 75ml for Jackets and Bags – over 30 per cent beeswax for tired grey leather

Grey leather is unforgiving. A grey jacket or a grey bag shows every dry patch, every rubbed corner and every pale line along a fold, because there is no rich colour to disguise it. And most shoe creams are built for shoes: they are lovely on a calf oxford and far too thin for the thick, thirsty hide of a garment.

Canadian is Saphir’s answer to precisely that. It is a regenerating beeswax cream made in France for leather jackets, coats and bags, and its trick is the wax load: over 30 per cent beeswax, which makes it considerably richer than the renovating creams designed for footwear. On heavy or badly faded leather that extra wax is what gets a result.

It cleans, recolours, softens, nourishes and waterproofs in one pass, and crucially it does not rub off onto your clothes once it has been buffed. Saphir have been at this since 1920 and the pigment load is high, so a little goes a long way. Grey 14 is the shade for mid-grey leather, and of course you can use it on shoes, boots and furniture too.

Why choose the Saphir Grey Leather Cream?

  • Over 30 per cent beeswax. This is the number that matters. A concentrated wax formula feeds far deeper than a thin lotion, which is why Canadian works on thick garment hide where shoe creams simply sit on top.
  • Recolours as well as feeds. The grey pigment evens out the pale rub lines along folds, cuffs and bag corners, so the piece reads as one colour again rather than a map of where it has been worn.
  • It does not transfer to your clothes. Saphir formulate Canadian specifically for garments and bags. Buff it properly and you can wear a treated jacket over a white shirt without a second thought.
  • Softens stiff, dried-out leather. Leather that has gone board-like from years in a wardrobe takes this cream gratefully. It comes back supple, and supple leather stops cracking along the creases.
  • Adds real water repellency. The wax film means a shower beads on the surface instead of soaking into the hide, which is exactly what you want from a coat you actually wear outdoors.
  • Made in France by the leaders in leather care. Saphir have been making this since 1920 and it shows in the pigment quality and the way the cream works under a cloth. Highly pigmented, so use it sparingly.

How to use Saphir Canadian 14 Grey

  1. Brush the jacket, coat or bag down with a soft dirt brush to lift dust and loose grime out of the seams and folds.
  2. Because of how Canadian is composed you can go straight on from there. There is no need to strip the surface first, but the leather must be clean and dry.
  3. Squeeze a small amount onto a polishing cloth. There is a lot of pigment in this cream, so start with less than you think and add more as you go.
  4. Massage it gently into the leather in circular motions, working one panel at a time: a sleeve, then a front, then a collar.
  5. Give the worn areas an extra light pass. Elbows, cuffs, the bottom of a bag and the edges of pockets are where the colour goes first.
  6. Let it dry, then buff out thoroughly with a clean cloth so the finish is even and nothing can transfer to clothing.

My tip from behind the counter

Do a sleeve before you do the whole jacket. Not just a hidden test patch, a whole panel, so you can see how the shade sits on your leather and how much cream your hide actually drinks. It also stops the commonest mistake, which is loading the cloth heavily for the first panel and then having to blend a dark patch into everything else. And always buff more than feels necessary; that is what stops transfer.

Frequently asked questions

How is Canadian different from an ordinary shoe cream?

Wax content, mainly. Canadian carries over 30 per cent beeswax, which makes it much richer than the renovating creams built for footwear, and Saphir formulate it so it will not rub off onto clothing. That combination is what you want on a jacket, a coat or a bag. On a fine calf shoe a lighter pommade cream is easier to buff to a high shine.

Will grey 14 match my leather?

Saphir list 14 as grey and it suits most mid-grey leather. Because the pigment is strong it will also deepen a pale grey noticeably, so test somewhere out of sight first, such as under a collar or inside a bag flap. Apply thinly and build up if you need more depth rather than starting heavy.

Can I use it on my leather sofa?

You can, and it works well on tired furniture hide, though 75ml will not go far on a three-seater. For a whole sofa a larger tub of furniture cream is the sensible buy. Where Canadian earns its keep on furniture is spot work: worn arms, the front edge of a seat cushion, or a scuffed corner that has lost its colour.
