Saphir Canadian Hermes Red 12 – a bright orange-red beeswax cream for leather clothing, bags and shoes
Most people meet Saphir through shoe cream, but Canadian is the one I recommend most often for leather that is not on your feet. Jackets, bags, luggage, furniture and hard-wearing shoes all take it, and it does four jobs in a single pass: it cleans, it feeds, it recolours and it makes the leather water repellent.
This hermes red leather cream is Saphir Canadian colour 12, a bright orange-red rather than a deep burgundy. Saphir have been blending in France since 1920 and Canadian is a concentrated beeswax cream with more than 30% beeswax in the tube, which is a remarkable figure for something you can spread with a cloth.
That concentration is why it behaves the way it does. There is a lot of pigment in there, so it covers faded panels and rub marks properly, and it dries quickly without staining the clothes you wear over it. On a leather jacket that has gone dull at the elbows and shoulders it is transformative.
The 75ml tube is easier to live with than a jar for this kind of job, because you can squeeze out a small, controlled amount onto a thick cotton cloth rather than digging into a pot with dirty fingers. Work panel by panel and buff well at the end.
Why choose Saphir Hermes Red Leather Cream 12?
- Four jobs in one product. Cleans, nourishes, recolours and makes the leather water repellent. For jackets and bags that saves you two or three separate steps.
- More than 30% beeswax. A genuinely concentrated cream. The leather comes back supple, which is exactly what a stiff old jacket needs.
- Heavily pigmented. Bright hermes red covers rubbed elbows, worn bag corners and scuffed toe caps rather than simply sitting on top of them.
- Dries quickly and does not stain. Buff it out properly and it will not transfer onto shirts, trousers or a car seat.
- Made for clothing, not just shoes. Saphir designed Canadian for jackets, bags, luggage and furniture. Shoes are a bonus rather than the main event.
- Saphir quality since 1920. A French house that has stayed independent and still makes leather care its only business.
How to use Saphir Hermes Red Leather Cream 12
- Brush the leather down with a soft brush to lift dust and dirt out of the grain and the seams.
- Squeeze a small amount of cream onto a thick cotton cloth. There is a lot of pigment in Canadian, so start with less than you think.
- Spread it over one panel at a time in even, circular movements, working it into faded and rubbed areas.
- Keep the layer thin and consistent; on a jacket, treat a whole sleeve or panel before moving on so you never leave a hard edge.
- Let the cream dry for a few minutes. It absorbs quickly because of the wax content.
- Buff thoroughly with a clean cloth. This is the step that stops any colour transferring onto clothing, so be generous with it.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hermes Red a deep red or a bright one?
Bright. Saphir 12 is an orange-leaning red, closer to a poppy than to burgundy or oxblood. If your leather is a dark wine red, look at Bordeaux 08 instead.
Can I use it on a leather sofa?
Yes, Canadian is suitable for furniture, and the beeswax content is excellent for reviving dried-out leather. Work in small sections, use thin layers and buff each one well before you sit on it.
