Saphir Canadian Bordeaux Beeswax Leather Cream 08 — clean, feed and recolour in one go
This bordeaux beeswax leather cream is the product I recommend when someone brings in a burgundy jacket or a wine-coloured bag rather than a pair of shoes. Canadian is Saphir’s restorative cream, and its trick is that it cleans, nourishes and puts colour back in a single application, which is exactly what a large leather surface needs.
It is heavily pigmented, so a faded shoulder seam or a rubbed handle comes back rather than simply looking slightly better. At the same time the beeswax and oils leave the leather supple and noticeably water-repellent, and the cream dries quickly enough that a jacket is wearable the same day.
Buffed out properly it does not mark clothing, which is the question everyone asks about a coloured cream on a jacket. A 75ml tube at £13.99 is enough for a full garment with plenty left over.
Why choose this bordeaux beeswax leather cream?
- Three jobs in one application. It lifts surface grime, feeds the leather and lays down pigment at the same time, which saves you buying and applying three separate products. On a jacket or a holdall that is a real difference in effort.
- Enough pigment for genuinely faded leather. Bordeaux fades towards a dusty pink at the wear points, and this puts the depth back into cuffs, elbows, handles and toe caps rather than glazing over them.
- It leaves the leather supple and water-repellent. The wax and oil content restores flexibility to leather that has gone stiff and adds a light barrier against rain. Soft leather also creases far more attractively than dry leather does.
- It dries fast and does not stain once buffed. Buff it out properly and you can wear a treated jacket without worrying about the shirt underneath. That is the main reason I steer people towards Canadian for garments.
- A tube, not a tin. The tube dispenses exactly what you want onto a cloth and keeps the rest sealed, which matters when you are working across a large panel and stopping to reload.
- Saphir quality behind it. Saphir have been making leather care in France since 1920 and their products are used in more than fifty countries. That reputation is built on formulations exactly like this one.
How to use Canadian cream on jackets, bags and shoes
Because Canadian cleans as it goes, the preparation here is lighter than with a normal shoe cream.
- Brush the item down to remove surface dust, working into the seams and around any hardware.
- Squeeze a little cream onto a soft polishing cloth — the pigment load is high, so start with less than feels right.
- Apply it in even circles over one panel at a time, so you keep track of what has been covered.
- Concentrate on the faded areas, building the colour gradually rather than loading it on in one pass.
- Let the cream dry for a few minutes until the surface looks matt rather than wet.
- Buff the whole panel out firmly with a clean cloth until nothing transfers onto your fingers.
My tip from behind the counter
The buffing stage is not optional with this one. Canadian carries a lot of pigment and anything you leave sitting on the surface will eventually find its way onto a shirt collar or a pale sofa. Work the whole item over with a dry cloth until it comes away clean, then leave the piece somewhere airy overnight before you wear or use it. Do that and it behaves perfectly; skip it and you will blame the cream for something that was really impatience.

Frequently asked questions
Will it rub off onto my clothes?
Not once it has been buffed out properly, and that is the whole answer. Canadian is made for garment leather precisely because it sets down and stops transferring, but it needs a firm buff with a dry cloth and a few hours of air first. Test a cuff before you commit to the whole jacket.
Can I use it on shoes as well?
Certainly, and it does a lovely job on smooth leather boots that have gone dry. It is more of a restorer than an everyday shine cream, so I would use it a couple of times a year on shoes and a normal pommadier or wax polish in between.
What sort of leather is it not suitable for?
Keep it away from suede and nubuck, because a pigmented cream mats the nap into a dark patch that cannot be brushed out. Patent leather is also a no, since the finish is a coating rather than a surface the cream can penetrate. Very soft aniline and untreated leathers should be tested somewhere hidden first, as they drink pigment unevenly. Everything else — standard smooth garment leather, bag leather, upholstery and shoe leather — is fair game.
