Saphir Beige Suede and Nubuck Spray 16 – 200ml Renovetine Recolouring Aerosol – the shade where every single mark shows

Pale suede is the least forgiving material in your wardrobe. A beige desert boot or a sand coloured trainer picks up a rain spot on the toe, a dark shadow where the ball of the foot flexes and a grubby ring around the collar, and because the base colour is so light every one of those marks announces itself. The shoe is not damaged. It just looks tired everywhere at once.

That is the job this canister does. Saphir Renovetine in shade 16 is a beige suede and nubuck spray that lays a fine even veil of pigment across the whole upper, so the shadows and the clean areas meet in the middle instead of fighting each other. It feeds the fibre at the same time.

Saphir have been in leather care in France for a century, and pale shades are where their pigment quality really tells.

Why choose this beige suede and nubuck spray?

  • It evens out patchiness rather than painting over it. The pigment is fine enough to settle into the nap without building a crust, so a boot with dark flex marks and a pale heel finishes as one colour. This is the difference between a shoe that looks cared for and one that looks coated. Blotchy pale suede is the most common thing people bring me.
  • A beige that stays warm, not chalky. Shade 16 is a soft sandy beige with a little warmth in it, rather than the grey-tinged putty you often get from cheap sprays. On a desert boot it reads as the colour the boot was new. Cold beige is what makes a rescued shoe look plastic.
  • The nap stays soft under your hand. Conditioning agents in the formula keep the individual fibres flexible while the colour goes in, so the suede does not set hard. You can feel the difference the moment it dries.
  • Everyday water and dirt resistance. Once dry the surface turns away a light shower and the dust of a city pavement instead of drinking it straight in. Pale suede benefits from that more than any other shade, because on beige a single dark splash is a whole evening ruined. It is no substitute for a proper waterproofer, but it helps.
  • Suede and nubuck both, from one canister. Sanded nubuck and traditional suede take colour at different rates, and many products really only suit one. This one is formulated for both, so a nubuck chukka and a suede trainer can be done in the same session with the same result.
  • Two hundred millilitres is generous. That is several pairs and several seasons from one canister, and a sealed aerosol holds its pressure and its pigment for years when it is stored upright somewhere cool.

How to use the Saphir Beige Suede and Nubuck Spray 16 – 200ml Renovetine Recolouring Aerosol

With pale suede, preparation is not optional. Any dirt still in the nap when you spray will be sealed under the colour where you cannot reach it.

  1. Brush the upper thoroughly with a suede brush, working in every direction to lift trapped grit.
  2. Treat any greasy marks with a suede cleaner or a rubber block and let the shoe dry completely.
  3. Pack the shoes out with trees or paper so the creases open up and take colour evenly.
  4. Cover the sole edge and any leather trim, then shake the canister hard for a good thirty seconds.
  5. Mist the whole upper from about twenty five centimetres in light passes, never letting one spot go wet.
  6. Allow several hours to dry, then brush the nap back up with a clean suede brush.

My tip as a shoe specialist

Beige punishes impatience more than any other shade. Because the base colour is so pale, a heavy pass shows as a dark halo the moment it dries, and once that halo is there the only cure is to spray the whole shoe again to match it. So mist lightly, wait, look at it in daylight rather than under a kitchen bulb, and only then decide whether it wants more. Nine times out of ten, two thin coats and a firm brushing is all a pale boot ever needed.

Frequently asked questions

Will it cover a dark water stain on beige suede?

It will do a great deal to disguise one, which is usually enough. A water mark is a tide line where minerals have dried in the fibre, and a full even coat pulls the two tones much closer together. Do the entire shoe, not just the stain.

Is this the same as the sand or taupe shades?

No. Shade 16 is a warm beige, sitting lighter than taupe and warmer than a grey sand. If your boot is a cool stone colour you will get a closer match from the lighter grey end of the range.

How often should I redo a pale pair?

For boots in regular winter use, once or twice a season is sensible. Brushing after every few wears does far more good than frequent spraying, and you will see the colour needing help long before the material does.

  1. Mar B –

still a great product. Do check the spray now and then though. It can get stuck

  2. Esther (verified owner) –

The colour doesn’t match in the slightest. I understand there can be some difference, but pink instead of beige is quite a difference for what is really a basic base colour. And then I think 17 euro including postage and a ruined bag is a lot of money. The customer service response really wasn’t appropriate, something like ‘how annoying for you’ would have been nice. Instead they tried to put the blame everywhere else, but taking even a little responsibility themselves sadly didn’t come into it. Shame.
