Marla Dark Grey Shoe Polish 017 – Beeswax Cream 50ml – the shade almost nobody stocks

Grey leather is a lovely thing to own until it needs attention, and then you discover that the shelves offer black, brown and neutral and very little else. A neutral cream will feed the leather but leave every scuffed edge exactly as pale as it was, and black is far too heavy a hand. This dark grey shoe polish is the honest match for charcoal and slate leather, which is why it is one of the shades I get asked for most.

It is a proper maintenance cream rather than just a shine product. Marla build it on beeswax, which has been used to look after leather for generations because it feeds and protects at the same time. The pigment tops up faded areas and hides light scuffs, so the whole shoe reads as one even tone again rather than a patchwork of grey and pale grey.

Shade 017 is the darker of the greys, a deep charcoal tone that suits grey brogues, boots, loafers and matching bags. The 50ml tin lasts a very long time, because a proper polishing session uses far less cream than most people imagine. At £5.95 it is one of the cheapest things you can do that genuinely extends the life of a good pair of shoes.

Why choose the Marla dark grey shoe polish?

What a coloured cream does that a tin of neutral wax cannot.

  • It matches a shade nobody stocks. Dark grey is genuinely hard to find, and a matching cream is the only thing that hides scuffs on charcoal leather. Neutral feeds the leather but leaves the damage visible, and black simply overwhelms it.
  • Beeswax feeds the leather. Natural waxes keep the leather soft and help prevent the drying and cracking that ends a shoe’s life early. That is the part of polishing that actually matters, long before the shine does.
  • It restores faded colour. The dark grey pigment revives worn panels and disguises light scuffs for an even finish, which is what makes a well-kept pair look cared for rather than merely clean.
  • It adds everyday protection. A thin layer of wax helps shield the leather against dirt and moisture during normal wear, so rain and road grime have less chance to soak in.
  • It buffs to a warm shine. Work it out with a cloth and you get a healthy glow rather than a plastic gloss. Grey leather in particular looks far better with a soft sheen than a mirror finish.
  • It is remarkably good value. A 50ml tin at £5.95 covers many polishing sessions, so keeping smooth leather in condition costs very little indeed. Buy it before you need it and it will be there when you do.

How to use the Marla dark grey shoe polish

The whole routine takes five minutes, and the resting time does most of the work.

  1. Brush away loose dirt and dust from the shoes first, working into the welt and around the heel.
  2. Take a little polish onto a polishing cloth or a small dauber brush. Less than you think, and again if needed.
  3. Apply a thin, even layer, working it into the leather with small circular movements, panel by panel.
  4. Do not forget the welt, the heel counter and the flex crease, which are where wear shows first.
  5. Let the polish rest for about 15 minutes so the waxes settle into the leather.
  6. Buff with a clean cloth or a horsehair brush to bring up a warm, even shine.

My tip from behind the counter

Less is more with any shoe polish, and it is doubly true of a coloured one. Several thin layers give a deeper, longer-lasting finish than one heavy coat, and on grey leather a thick application dries slightly chalky in the creases where it cannot buff out. If a pair is badly scuffed, build the colour up over two or three separate sessions rather than trying to fix it all at once. Keep a soft cloth just for buffing, too: a clean dry cloth makes all the difference to that final shine.

Frequently asked questions

Will dark grey match my shoes exactly?

Greys vary a great deal between leathers, so test on a hidden area such as the inside of the heel first. Shade 017 is the darker charcoal end of the range, so if your pair is a lighter dove or silver grey, a mid grey or a neutral cream will suit it better.

Does it really restore colour, or just shine?

It does both. The pigment tops up faded areas and covers light scuffs so the leather looks even again, while the beeswax feeds and protects. That combination is why a coloured cream beats a clear wax on any shoe that has seen some wear.

Can I use it on suede?

No, shoe polish is for smooth leather only. Cream flattens and darkens the nap, which is the opposite of what suede needs. Suede and nubuck want a brush and a dedicated spray instead.
