Kaps Penetrating Dye for Smooth Leather – Black (118) – 50ml – deep black penetrating dye that soaks into the leather, not onto it

There is an important difference between a paint and a dye, and it decides which one you should be reaching for. A paint lays a coloured film on top of the leather. A dye soaks into it and colours the fibres themselves. If you want the grain, the pull-up and the natural character of the leather to stay visible, a black penetrating dye is the right tool.

This is Kaps Penetrating Dye in shade 118 Black, in a 50ml bottle with an applicator brush in the cap. Kaps make it for exactly the job most people need it for: black shoes and boots that have faded to a tired charcoal, or a pair that needs taking to a deeper, more uniform black than any cream can manage.

Because the colour goes in rather than on, it does not sit as a skin that can peel at the flex points. It is waterproof once cured and it does not fade back in the first few weeks, which is the usual complaint with cheaper dyes. Kaps make it for natural smooth leather, grained leather, faux leather and eco leather, so bags, belts and jackets are as much in scope as footwear.

One honest caveat: a dye works with the existing colour rather than hiding it. Black is the most forgiving shade of all in that respect, but the leather does need to be properly stripped and clean first or the result will be patchy.

Why choose Kaps Penetrating Dye?

  • It colours the fibres, not the surface – the dye penetrates the leather so the finish cannot flake or peel away at the creases the way a thick paint film sometimes does.
  • Deep, even black – black is the shade a penetrating dye does best. Faded, sun-bleached and patchy leather comes back to one uniform tone.
  • Waterproof and colourfast once cured – after the full 24 hours it will not lift in the rain or transfer onto your socks, which matters on a pair you wear in British weather.
  • Applicator brush in the cap – the brush reaches the welt, the stitching and the tight corners around the eyelets where a sponge simply cannot go.
  • Works on faux and eco leather too – not every dye does. That makes it useful for bags, belts and vegan uppers as well as traditional smooth leather shoes.
  • The grain stays visible – because you are not burying the leather under pigment, the natural texture and any pull-up character survive the treatment.

How to use Kaps Penetrating Dye

  1. Remove the laces, brush off all loose dirt, and shake or stir the bottle with the applicator brush until the colour is completely uniform.
  2. Strip the existing finish, grease and old polish from the leather – use a proper leather cleaner or preparer on natural leather, and a cloth dampened with alcohol on faux leather – then let it dry fully.
  3. Test the dye on a hidden spot such as the inside of the heel or the tongue to check the shade and the coverage.
  4. Apply thin, even coats with the brush, working from the seams outwards and keeping a wet edge so you do not leave overlap marks.
  5. Add a second coat if the coverage needs it, then leave the shoes for a full 24 hours to cure before wearing or polishing them.

Haico’s tip: do not skip the stripping stage and do not rush the curing. Nine out of ten disappointing dye jobs come down to a leftover layer of wax polish sealing the leather, or a pair being worn before the dye has hardened. Once it has cured, a coat of black cream will bring the shine back beautifully.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a penetrating dye and a leather paint?

A penetrating dye soaks into the leather and colours the fibres, so the grain stays visible and nothing can peel. A paint sits on top as a flexible film and gives heavier, opaque coverage. Choose the dye when you want a natural look on real leather, and a paint when you need to hide damage or make a dramatic colour change.

Can I dye brown shoes black?

Yes, and black is the one shade where this reliably works. Strip the finish thoroughly first, then build two thin coats rather than one heavy one. Expect the brown to influence the final tone very slightly, which usually reads as a rich, slightly warm black rather than a flat one.

Does it need a finish or sealer afterwards?

It does not need one to be colourfast, but I would always follow up with a black shoe cream or a colourless wax once the dye has cured. The dye restores the colour; the wax restores the sheen and the water resistance.

Will it stain my hands and the worktop?

It certainly will, so wear gloves and cover the table. It is a proper dye rather than a wash-off colour – which is exactly why it performs so well on the leather.
