Description
Kaps Navy Blue Suede Penetrating Dye 117 – 50ml Suede and Nubuck Dye with Brush – a permanent navy for suede that has had enough
There is a point where a reviver is not enough. The stain will not lift, the shade has gone patchy beyond rescue, or you simply want a pale pair of suede boots to become something far more useful. That is the job this navy blue suede penetrating dye was made for: it soaks into the fibre and changes the shade properly, rather than laying a tint over the top.
Kaps supply the shoe repair trade, and it shows in the packaging – a 50ml bottle with the brush built into the cap, so you can pick out seams and welts before you flood the open panels. Shade 117 is the true navy blue you want for suede trainers, chukkas and desert boots, and 50ml is enough for roughly half a square metre in two to three coats, which comfortably covers a pair of shoes.
Why choose the Kaps Navy Blue Suede Penetrating Dye?
- Recolours rather than refreshes. Deep-penetrating pigment goes into the nap and stays there, so stains, sun bleaching and patchy wear disappear under an even navy blue.
- Brush in the cap for precision. Seams, the join between sole and upper, and deep scratches get dye first, which is the difference between a professional job and a pale outline round every stitch.
- Builds up in thin coats. Two or three light coats give real depth without stiffening the leather, and you decide when the shade is dark enough.
- Stays flexible when cured. After a full 12 hours the dye has hardened into the fibre and moves with the shoe, so it does not crack across the flex line.
- Goes well beyond footwear. The same bottle sorts out a faded suede bag, a nubuck jacket panel or a pair of gloves – anywhere napped leather has lost its shade.
How to use the Kaps Navy Blue Suede Penetrating Dye
- Brush the shoes thoroughly with a suede or crepe brush, and take loose dirt off the soles with a stiffer brush.
- If the leather is new or has been treated with a protector spray, clean it with a suede cleaner first and let it dry – dye will not grip a water-repellent film.
- Mask the sole edge and heel with tape, then stir the dye with the brush until the shade is completely uniform.
- Paint the difficult areas first: seams, the sole-to-upper join, scuffs and scratches.
- Work across the open panels in thin, even strokes, keeping to the direction of the nap.
- Let the first coat dry, add a second (and a third if you want more depth), then leave the shoes 12 hours before you brush the nap up and finish with a protector spray.
My tip from behind the counter
Dyeing only ever works from light to dark, so plan the shade before you open the bottle – navy will cover grey, beige and pale blue beautifully, but it will not lift a brown boot. And do both shoes in the same session with the same number of coats. Suede takes dye slightly differently from one day to the next, and a pair that was dyed a week apart never quite matches.

Frequently asked questions
Can I dye light grey suede boots navy blue?
Yes – that is exactly the sort of job this handles well. Clean them first so there is no protector film left, then build the shade up in two or three thin coats. Expect the finish to look matt until you brush the nap up at the end.
Will the dye rub off onto my socks or trousers?
Not once it has cured. Give it the full 12 hours, then brush firmly with a suede brush to lift any surplus pigment before the first wear. Rushing the curing time is the one thing that causes transfer.
Do I need a protector spray afterwards?
I would always finish with one. The dye sorts out the shade but does nothing for water resistance, so a suede protector applied once the leather is completely dry is what keeps your new navy looking sharp through a British autumn.

My blue suede ‘Van Liers’ had gone a bit faded, though still in fine condition. Plucked up the courage and ordered a bottle of dark blue penetrating dye. Clear instructions in the accompanying email. Nicked a little brush from the craft box of my daughter who’s moved out, put the gloves on and got to work. Less than half an hour’s work, and a gorgeous result. Luckily the white stitching has stayed white too. Do note: one pot is just about enough for 1 pair. Mind you, I am a size 47. Recommended!
