Kaps Dark Brown Shoe Polish Tin 106 – 50ml Wax Cream for Smooth Leather – the honest little tin that feeds, colours and shines

There is a particular satisfaction in a tin of wax polish. Nothing to clog, no sponge head to dry out, no pump to give up halfway through a job. Just pigment, wax and five quiet minutes of your evening. This dark brown shoe polish tin from Kaps is that object: 50ml of cream with wax that feeds the leather, tops the shade back up and finishes with a proper shine.

Kaps build it on natural ingredients, principally beeswax and carnauba wax. The beeswax does the nourishing and softening; carnauba is the hard, glossy wax that gives you depth of shine and a useful layer of water resistance on top. Shade 106 is Kaps’ dark brown, the deep chocolate tone that most brown boots, Derbies and brogues actually are once they have been worn in for a season.

Kaps is a European manufacturer that has supplied cobblers and shoe repairers for decades, and it shows in how consistently the tins behave from batch to batch. There is enough pigment in this one to disguise a scuffed toe cap and a worn heel edge, but not so much that it cakes into the welt. At £5.99 for a screw-top 50ml tin it is one of the best-value things on the shelf.

Why choose the Kaps dark brown shoe polish?

  • Beeswax and carnauba wax. Natural waxes rather than cheap fillers: beeswax to nourish and soften, carnauba to build a hard, water-resistant shine.
  • Strong colour restore. A high pigment load tops the dark brown back up rather than glazing over a faded shade, and it disguises light surface scratches as it goes.
  • A proper screw-top tin. Nothing to perish, nothing to leak in a drawer or a wash bag, and enough polish in 50ml to last most people a very long time.
  • Feeds as well as shines. The softer creams and oils keep the leather flexible, which is what stops the creases across the vamp turning into cracks.
  • Works on synthetic uppers too. Suitable for natural and synthetic smooth leather, so it earns its place on work boots as well as on good shoes.
  • Trade-grade at high-street money. Kaps supplies shoe repairers across Europe, so you are buying professional polish for the price of a coffee.

How to use the Kaps dark brown shoe polish

  1. Unlace the shoes and brush off loose dirt and dust with a horsehair brush, working into the welt and the seam around the sole.
  2. If the leather is grubby or heavily waxed, clean it first. Polish sits far better on clean leather than on last month’s layer.
  3. Take a small amount on a dauber brush, a sponge or a soft cloth. A pea-sized amount will do a whole shoe.
  4. Work it in with small circles, covering the upper evenly and pressing a little extra into the toe, the heel counter and the flex creases.
  5. Leave it for about ten minutes so the waxes can set and the pigment can settle into the surface.
  6. Buff briskly with a polishing brush or a soft cloth until the shine comes up, and repeat with a second thin coat if the toe still looks tired.

My tip from behind the counter

If you want a mirror finish on the toe cap, build it in layers rather than in weight. Two or three very thin coats, each buffed out properly, will beat one thick one every time. Add a single drop of water to the cloth on the final pass and keep working in small circles until the haze disappears. It takes patience, but this tin has enough carnauba in it to reward the effort.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a cream or a wax?

It is a cream with wax, which is the best of both. The cream element feeds the leather and carries the pigment; the beeswax and carnauba give you the shine and the water resistance. That is why one tin covers nourishing, colouring and polishing.

Will dark brown work on a mid-brown shoe?

It will deepen it. If your shoes are a mid or tan brown and you want to keep them that way, choose a lighter shade. If they have gone patchy and you are happy for them to settle a touch deeper, dark brown blends beautifully.

How long does a tin last?

Far longer than people expect. Used correctly, a pea-sized amount does one shoe, so a 50ml tin will see a pair through dozens of polishes. Keep the lid screwed down and it will not dry out.
