Famaco Famacolor Extra Opaque Leather Dye Cream Bright Red 15ml – full coverage for scuffs, scrapes and faded leather

Famacolor sits in a very useful gap in the shoe care shelf. On one side you have highly opaque shoe creams that colour but do not really repair; on the other, penetrating dyes that repair but are unforgiving to apply. Famacolor is a pigment cream – a red leather dye cream that covers completely while still behaving like a cream.

The 314 Bright Red shade is a clean, vivid red, and the coverage is genuinely extra opaque. That makes it the right choice for the damage that shows most: the scuffed toe cap, the bare patch on the heel, the scratch across the vamp and the general fading that happens to coloured leather after a couple of seasons in the sun.

It works on far more than shoes. I have used Famacolor on handbags, belts, leather jackets, small upholstery repairs and the corners of suitcases. Anywhere the pigment has worn off a finished leather surface, a 15ml jar of the matching shade will bring it back.

Do not be put off by the size. 15ml is a small jar, but you apply Famacolor in tiny amounts with a cloth or a fingertip, and one jar will cover a great many touch-ups. Famaco make it in an enormous range of shades, so if bright red is not quite your colour there is almost certainly one that is.

Why choose this red leather dye cream?

  • Extra opaque coverage. Full, even colour that hides bare patches and scratches instead of just tinting them.
  • Repairs and recolours in one step. Faded, worn leather is renewed and the damage is filled visually, without a separate primer.
  • Easy to control. It handles like a cream, so you can build coverage gradually rather than committing to a solvent dye in one go.
  • Ideal for the usual suspects. Scuffed toe caps, worn heels, scratches and general fading on coloured leather.
  • Works well beyond footwear. Handbags, belts, jackets, luggage corners and small upholstery repairs all respond nicely.
  • Huge shade range. Famaco offer Famacolor in dozens of colours, so matching an unusual leather is realistic.

How to use Famacolor Extra Opaque

  1. Clean the leather thoroughly first with a brush or a damp cloth. Famacolor needs a clean, dry surface to grip, and for best results use a leather cleaner beforehand.
  2. Let the leather dry completely, then test the shade on a hidden area so you can check it against your own leather before committing.
  3. Pick up a very small amount on a cloth, sponge or fingertip and work it into the damaged area with light circular strokes, feathering the edges outwards so there is no hard line.
  4. Let it soak in and dry for fifteen to twenty minutes. On badly worn areas, build up two or three thin coats rather than applying one thick layer.
  5. Buff firmly with a clean cloth to even out the finish and remove any surplus pigment, then finish with a neutral wax polish or protector spray to seal your work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Famacolor and a leather dye?

A dye penetrates and stains the leather permanently, which gives depth but very little forgiveness. Famacolor is a highly pigmented cream that sits in and on the surface, so it covers bare patches completely while still letting you build up gradually.

Will it rub off on my clothes or socks?

Not once it has dried and been buffed properly. The important step is the final buffing, which removes surplus pigment from the surface. Sealing with a neutral wax polish afterwards makes it more robust still.

Can it fix a deep scratch or a gouge?

It will hide the colour loss beautifully, which is usually 90% of what you notice. It cannot fill a physical hole, though – for that you need a leather filler first, then Famacolor over the top once it has cured.

How many shoes will one 15ml jar do?

Far more than you would expect, because you use it in tiny quantities for touch-ups. For spot-repairing toes and heels, one jar comfortably lasts years; if you are recolouring whole shoes you may want two.
