Description
Dasco Shoe Cream Mid Tan 117 – the traditional British cream in a 50ml jar
Some products earn their reputation quietly. Dasco shoe cream mid tan is one of those: no marketing noise, no reinvention every two years, just an emulsified cream that has been nourishing British shoe leather for decades and is still what a lot of shoemakers hand to their own customers.
The formula is built on beeswax and fine pigments. The wax feeds the leather and keeps it supple, the pigment goes back into the areas that have gone pale at the toe and along the flex creases, and a few minutes with a brush turns the whole thing into a soft, even shine. It suits smooth leather, full-grain and calf equally well.
Shade 117 is Mid Tan – the everyday tan that sits between a light natural and a proper chestnut. It is the shade most tan brogues, derbies and boots actually are, which is why it is one of the codes we sell most of.
Behind the name is Dunkelman & Son, who set up in Battersea in 1946 and moved into shoe care in 1950. The Dasco brand was born in the 1960s, and since 1969 the company has been based in Desborough, Northamptonshire, in the middle of England’s shoemaking country. That is about as good a pedigree as shoe cream gets.
Why choose Dasco shoe cream in Mid Tan?
- Beeswax at the heart of it. The wax base feeds the leather rather than simply coating it, so the uppers stay supple and are far less likely to crack at the flex point.
- Enough pigment to restore colour. Mid tan 117 puts colour back into the pale, rubbed areas so a tired pair reads as one even shade again.
- Buffs to a soft, honest shine. This is a proper cream finish – warm and low, not the plastic gloss you get from a quick-shine sponge.
- Masks light scuffs. Superficial marks and scrapes disappear into the pigment, which buys a pair of shoes a great deal more life.
- A 50ml glass jar goes a long way. You use a fingertip at a time, so a single jar will comfortably see one pair through several years of regular care.
- Genuine British shoe care heritage. Made for the Northamptonshire shoe trade since the 1950s, and still the cream a lot of traditional makers reach for.
How to use Dasco shoe cream
- Remove the laces and brush the shoes down thoroughly with a horsehair brush to lift off dust and grit.
- Wipe away any old build-up of polish with a damp cloth or a leather cleaner, and let the shoes dry completely.
- Take a small amount of cream on a cloth or a dauber brush – less than you think you need.
- Work it into the leather in small circles, paying particular attention to the toe cap, the flex creases and the welt line.
- Leave the cream to sink in for about five minutes so the wax and pigment can settle into the surface.
- Buff briskly with a clean horsehair brush, then finish with a soft cloth for a deeper, more even shine.
If the shoes live outdoors, follow with a wax polish on the toe cap for extra protection, and a protector spray before the first proper downpour.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if Mid Tan is the right shade for my shoes?
Mid tan sits between a light natural tan and a darker chestnut, and it covers the majority of tan brogues, derbies and Chelsea boots sold in the UK. If you are unsure between two shades, always take the lighter one: cream builds with each application, so you can deepen the colour over two or three polishes, but you cannot lift it back out once it is in the leather.
What is the difference between shoe cream and wax polish?
Cream carries pigment and nourishment into the leather, so it restores colour and keeps the uppers supple. Wax sits on the surface and builds shine and water resistance. The two are partners, not rivals: cream first to feed and colour, wax afterwards on the toe cap and heel if you want a harder, glossier finish on top of it.
