Collonil Scotch Waterproofing Shoe Cream 326 – care and protection in one tube

Waterstop is the tube I hand over most often when someone asks for one product that does everything. It is a scotch waterproofing shoe cream, which means it feeds the leather, refreshes the colour and makes the surface water repellent in a single step – and the sponge cap on the tube means you never need to hunt for a cloth.

Collonil have been making leather care in Germany since 1909, and the formula shows it. Jojoba and almond oils keep smooth leather supple rather than simply coating it, while the waterproofing element sees off light rain and road spray. Shade 326 Scotch is a warm mid-tan with a whisky glow to it, which suits everything from country brogues to tan Chelsea boots.

Why choose Collonil Waterstop?

  • Three jobs, one tube – nourishment, colour refresh and water repellency all in a single application, which saves a whole shelf of separate products.
  • Jojoba and almond oil – genuinely conditioning oils that keep the fibres supple, so the leather resists cracking across the flex lines.
  • Sponge applicator cap – squeeze a rice-grain amount straight onto the sponge and spread it. No cloth, no mess, no wasted product.
  • Works on high-tech materials too – as well as all smooth leathers, it handles the modern coated and combination uppers you find on comfort footwear.
  • Over 30 shades in the range – so the tan on your boots can be matched properly rather than approximated with a neutral.

How to use the Waterstop tube

  1. Brush the shoes clean and dry, and take the laces out so you can reach the tongue and the eyelet facing.
  2. Unscrew the cap, squeeze the tube gently until a rice-grain amount of cream comes through the sponge, and start on one shoe.
  3. Spread a thin, even layer over the leather with the sponge, working in small circles and paying attention to the toe and the heel counter.
  4. Add a little extra on the flex creases and around the welt, where water gets in first and the leather works hardest.
  5. Let the cream settle for about 15 minutes so it can be absorbed properly.
  6. Buff off any excess with a soft polishing cloth or a horsehair brush until the surface feels dry and looks even.

My tip from behind the counter

Treat a new pair before their first wet outing rather than after it. Leather that goes out already fed and protected simply shrugs off the first soaking, whereas leather that has been drenched once has already lost oils you then have to put back. Ten minutes on a Sunday evening saves a great deal of remedial work.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a polish or a waterproofer?

Both, which is rather the point. It nourishes and refreshes the shade like a cream, and it leaves a water-repellent finish like a proofer. For a full mirror shine you would still add a wax polish on top.

Will scotch match my tan shoes?

Scotch 326 is a warm mid-tan with a golden cast. On most tan and cognac leathers it blends in nicely, but as with any pigmented cream, try it on the inside of the heel first if your leather is unusually light.

How often should I use it?

Roughly every ten to fifteen wears for everyday shoes, and always after they have been properly soaked. In winter I would treat walking shoes and boots once a fortnight.
