Collonil Rustical Tube Black 75ml – Shoe Cream for Greased and Waxed Leather – for the boots that are meant to look rugged

Greased leather is a different animal. Think oiled walking boots, waxy country brogues, rugged Chelsea boots and oiled nubuck — leathers that are deliberately fed with fats and waxes at the tannery and are supposed to look matt, slightly waxy and lived in. Treat those with an ordinary glossy shoe cream and you get a shiny, plasticky mess that loses the whole character of the shoe.

Collonil Rustical black is made precisely for that leather. It is a blend of natural waxes and oils with black pigment, designed to top up the grease content the leather loses through wear and rain, refresh the colour where it has gone grey at the flex points, and rebuild water resistance without adding a mirror shine. The look you end up with is a soft, even, low-lustre finish — exactly what these boots should have.

It comes as a 75ml tube with a sponge applicator built into the cap, which is a genuinely practical design. You squeeze a little through the sponge and work it straight onto the leather, with no separate cloth or brush needed for the main coat and no pot to dip into with cold hands.

Collonil has been making leather care in Germany since 1909, and Rustical is one of their long-standing specialist lines. If your boots have that dry, thirsty, slightly grey look about the creases, this is the tube that fixes it.

Why choose Collonil Rustical in black?

  • Built for greased leather – formulated for oiled and waxed leathers and oiled nubuck, so it preserves the matt, rugged look instead of turning it glossy.
  • Natural waxes and oils – replaces the fats that rain and wear strip out, keeping stiff country leather flexible rather than brittle.
  • Restores black properly – pigment feeds back into scuffed toes, creased vamps and worn heel edges where greased leather always goes pale first.
  • Re-waterproofs as it feeds – the wax content rebuilds the water-repellent surface, which matters a great deal on boots that live outdoors.
  • Sponge applicator in the cap – apply it straight from the tube with no cloth, no brush and no mess on your fingers.
  • Softens tired leather – genuinely revives worn, creased and cracking leather that has been neglected for a season or two.

How to use Collonil Rustical

  1. Brush the boots clean and dry. If they are wet, let them dry naturally at room temperature first — never in front of a radiator.
  2. Squeeze a small amount through the sponge applicator and work a thin layer over the leather in circular movements.
  3. Use a soft brush to push the cream into seams, the welt and any small gaps where the sponge cannot reach.
  4. Leave it to absorb for about fifteen minutes. Greased leather drinks slowly, so give it time before you judge the coverage.
  5. Buff lightly with a soft cloth or a polishing brush for an even, low-lustre finish. Add a second thin coat on very dry or badly faded areas.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my boots are greased leather?

Press a fingernail gently into a hidden area. Greased and oiled leather goes slightly lighter where it is stressed and the mark fades as the fats move back. It also feels faintly waxy rather than smooth and cool, and it never had a high shine when new.

Will Rustical make my boots shiny?

No, and that is the point. It leaves a soft, even, low-lustre finish. If you buff hard with a polishing brush you will lift a gentle sheen, but it will not build the mirror gloss you would get from a wax polish on calf leather.

Can I use black Rustical on dark brown boots?

I would not. Black pigment on brown greased leather goes muddy and is very difficult to reverse, because the leather absorbs it deeply. Use the brown shade for brown boots and the colourless version if you are unsure of the exact tone.

Is it enough on its own, or do I still need a waterproofing spray?

For most town and country wear, Rustical alone rebuilds a good level of water resistance. If your boots take a real battering on wet ground, add a wax spray or a leather grease over the top once the cream has been absorbed and buffed.
