Collonil Lack Polish Black 100ml – Patent Leather Polish – liquid gloss care for patent shoes and bags

Patent leather is the one finish that shows absolutely everything. A scuff on the toe, a dull grey film after a rainy walk, a hairline mark from the edge of a car door — on a glossy shoe it all stands out. Collonil Lack Polish is the liquid patent leather polish I reach for when a pair needs its mirror shine back, and the black version does something the colourless one cannot: it quietly disguises the pale, worn spots along the toe and heel.

This is a 100ml bottle of thin liquid care with a sponge head built into the neck, so you never have to hunt for a cloth or an applicator. You press the sponge, wipe it over the shoe, and the polish spreads in a very fine, even film. That film is the whole point — it feeds the coated surface so it stays flexible instead of drying out and crazing into those tiny cracks that eventually turn into flakes.

It also leaves patent leather noticeably less static, which sounds like a small thing until you own a pair of black patent brogues. Static is what pulls dust, lint and grit onto the surface within minutes of leaving the house. Take that away and your shoes simply stay cleaner for longer, so you polish less often and handle the leather less often too.

I use it on patent Oxfords and court shoes, on patent-trimmed trainers, and on the shiny coated finishes you find on a lot of modern handbags. If you own anything glossy that has started to look tired rather than damaged, this is the bottle I would start with.

Why choose Collonil Lack Polish Black?

  • A genuine mirror gloss – buffed properly, patent leather goes back to that wet-looking shine it had in the box, without any greasy haze left behind.
  • Black pigment hides worn spots – the pale, rubbed areas on toe caps and heel edges are toned back in, so a well-worn pair reads as smart again rather than scuffed.
  • Keeps the coating supple – patent finishes crack when they dry out. Regular light feeding keeps the surface flexible and stops those fine crazed lines forming.
  • Anti-static, so less dust – the treated surface stops attracting lint and grit, which genuinely reduces how often you need to wipe your shoes down.
  • Built-in sponge applicator – no cloth, no brush, no decanting. Press, wipe, buff — the whole job takes about two minutes per pair.
  • Not just for patent – it works equally well on reptile-print leather, coated leather and the shiny synthetics used in trainers, bags and belts.

How to use Collonil Lack Polish

  1. Wipe the shoes down first with a slightly damp cloth and let them dry. Polish over grit will only drag that grit across a glossy surface.
  2. Shake the bottle well, then press the sponge head against the shoe two or three times to load it with liquid. Try a hidden spot first — the inside of the heel is ideal.
  3. Work the polish over the surface in small circular movements, keeping the film thin and even. Less is genuinely more here; a heavy coat takes far longer to come up.
  4. Leave it for two to three minutes. The shoe will look flat and matte at this stage, which is exactly what should happen, so do not panic.
  5. Buff briskly with a soft dry cloth or a microfibre pad until the gloss snaps back. Repeat on badly worn spots rather than piling on more polish in one go.

Frequently asked questions

Will it make my shoes look painted?

No. The film it leaves is extremely thin and transparent, so the pigment tints the surface rather than covering it. On black patent shoes the effect is a deeper, more even black — not a painted-on layer. If you need real coverage over deep damage, a dedicated patent leather repair product is the better tool.

Why do my shoes look dull straight after I apply it?

That is completely normal. The liquid dries to a matte film first and only comes up to a gloss once you buff it. Buff within a few minutes of applying — leave it much longer and you will have to work considerably harder for the same shine.

Can I use it on a patent handbag?

Yes, and it is one of my favourite uses for it. The same coated finish is used on bags, belts and shoe trims, so the treatment is identical. Work in small sections and keep the sponge away from suede linings and fabric panels.

What is the difference between the black and the colourless version?

The formula is the same; only the pigment differs. Colourless is the safe all-rounder for any shade of patent leather, while black adds tone and is the one to choose if your black patent shoes have gone pale on the toes and heels. If you own both black and coloured patent, keep a colourless bottle alongside this one.
