Collonil Colourless Suede Spray 200ml – protection without a change of shade
Suede has one great weakness and one quiet one. The great weakness is water, which everybody knows about. The quiet one is sunlight, which bleaches the nap slowly over a couple of summers until your navy boots have gone a tired grey-blue. This Collonil colourless suede spray deals with both, and it does it without altering the shade you already have.
Colourless is the shade I recommend to most people, and for a simple reason: it works on every colour. Pastels, two-tone trainers, patterned suede, that awkward taupe you cannot quite name – none of them need a pigmented spray, they need protection and a bit of feeding. This one does exactly that while leaving the existing colour untouched.
The formula impregnates the nap so water beads and rolls off, feeds the fibres so they stay soft rather than going papery, and carries UV filters that slow down fading. Crucially, it does all of that while leaving the material breathable, so your feet are no worse off than before.
It comes as a 200ml aerosol, made in Germany by Collonil, who have been looking after leather since 1909. One can comfortably sees a couple of pairs through a full season of British weather.
Why choose the Collonil colourless suede spray?
- Works on every colour. Because it adds no pigment, one can covers your grey trainers, tan desert boots and navy loafers without any risk of a shade going wrong.
- Real water repellency. The impregnation makes water bead on the surface instead of soaking straight into the nap, which is what causes those dark tidemarks.
- UV filters against fading. Sunlight quietly bleaches suede over time. The filters slow that down, which matters most on strong colours and dark shades.
- Keeps the material breathable. It coats the individual fibres rather than sealing the surface, so the shoes still let moisture out while keeping rain from getting in.
- Feeds the nap. Suede that has never been treated goes stiff and papery. The conditioning agents keep it supple, so the nap brushes up properly.
- Also for textile and high-tech uppers. Trainers with mixed suede and mesh panels are fine, which makes it a sensible single can for a modern shoe rack.
How to use the Collonil colourless suede spray
- Brush the suede thoroughly with a crepe or rubber suede brush to lift the nap and remove dust before anything else.
- Deal with any marks first using a suede cleaner. Spraying over a stain simply waterproofs the stain in place.
- Make sure the shoes are completely dry and work outdoors or in a well-ventilated room. Never spray in a confined space.
- Hold the can about 20cm away and apply three light passes across the whole upper, keeping the can moving so nothing gets soaked.
- Leave the shoes to absorb and dry for around 20 minutes, away from radiators and direct sunlight.
- Brush the nap up again with the suede brush to restore the velvety texture, and repeat the treatment after eight to ten wears.
New suede shoes deserve two coats before they ever go outside. It is far easier to keep suede clean than to get it clean again.

Frequently asked questions
Will a colourless spray darken my suede?
It should not, and that is the whole reason to buy the colourless version. Any liquid will look slightly darker while it is wet, so do not panic in the first ten minutes. Once it has dried and you have brushed the nap up, the shade should be exactly where it started. As always, a quick test on the inside of the tongue costs you nothing and settles the question.
How often should I re-apply it?
As a rule of thumb, after every eight to ten wears, or whenever water stops beading on the surface and starts soaking in instead. In a wet British winter that might mean once a fortnight for boots you wear daily; for a pair you only bring out on dry days, twice a season is plenty. Always re-treat after cleaning, because cleaning removes the protection along with the dirt.
