Description

Collonil Colorit Black 751 – Extra Opaque Leather Colour Repair Cream 50ml – the tube you reach for when an ordinary cream is not enough

There is a point where a normal shoe cream simply cannot cope. The toe of a boot has been kicked bare, a child has scraped the front of a school shoe down to the pale under-layer, or a suitcase wheel has left a grey stripe across a black bag. That is what Collonil Colorit is for.

Colorit is an extra opaque colour paste, packed with far more pigment than an everyday shoe cream. Shade 751 is a covering black, and it does exactly what the name suggests: it covers. Applied thinly to a bare or damaged area, it puts a solid, even black back onto smooth leather. As a black leather scuff repair it is about as effective as anything I stock.

The important thing to understand is that this is a repair product, not a daily one. I would not use Colorit every fortnight on shoes that are in good condition – you would end up with a slightly heavy, painted look. Use it to fix the damage, then go back to a normal cream for regular care.

Collonil have been making leather care in Berlin since 1909, and Colorit is one of those quietly brilliant products that has been in cobblers’ drawers for decades for good reason.

Why choose Collonil Colorit Black?

  • Genuinely opaque coverage. Far more pigment than a standard cream, so bare toe caps, scuffed heels and deep scratches disappear rather than showing through.
  • Rescues shoes you were ready to give up on. School shoes, work boots, a favourite bag with a battered corner – a tube of Colorit often buys them another season or two.
  • Precise tube application. You can put a small blob exactly where the damage is instead of coating the whole shoe, which keeps the repair invisible.
  • Buffs to a proper finish. Once it has dried it polishes up like any other cream, so the repaired area matches the sheen of the rest of the shoe.
  • Also good on leather furniture and car seats. Anywhere smooth leather has lost its colour through rubbing, the same technique applies – small amounts, well worked in.
  • German-made since 1909. Collonil pigments are stable and do not go chalky or fade to a different shade after a few weeks.

How to use Collonil Colorit Black

  1. Brush the shoes clean and make sure they are completely dry. If they are damp, leave them at room temperature overnight first.
  2. Wipe the damaged area with a leather cleaner to lift off old wax and polish, so the Colorit can grip the leather rather than the layers on top of it.
  3. Squeeze a small amount onto a cloth or an applicator brush and work a thin layer into the damaged area with small circular movements. Build up in thin coats rather than one thick one.
  4. Let it dry for about 15 minutes. If the coverage is not solid yet, add a second thin layer and wait again.
  5. Polish with a soft cloth or a polishing brush. The warmth of the friction sets the finish and blends the repair into the surrounding leather.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Colorit as my normal shoe cream?

I would not. It is deliberately heavy on pigment for repair work, and used every week it will build up and dull the character of the leather. Fix the damage with Colorit, then keep the shoes looking good with an ordinary nourishing shoe cream.

Will it rub off on my socks or trousers?

Not once it has dried and been buffed properly. The step people skip is the polishing – give the repaired area a good buff with a cloth and any loose pigment comes away there rather than on your clothes.

Does it work on scratched leather sofas?

Yes, on smooth pigmented leather it works very well for worn arm rests and scuffed corners. Test on a hidden section first, because coated furniture leathers vary a lot.

How is this different from a leather dye?

A dye penetrates into the leather and permanently changes its colour. Colorit sits on the surface as a pigmented layer, which makes it far more forgiving – if you are not happy with the result you can clean it back off.
