Collonil Black Suede Colour Reviver 751 – Nubuk plus Textile 100ml with Sponge Applicator – precision colour, no overspray

If your black suede trainers have white midsoles, contrast stitching or a mesh panel, a black suede colour reviver in a bottle beats an aerosol every time. This is Collonil Nubuk plus Textile in 751 Black, 100ml with a sponge fitted straight into the neck, and that sponge is the whole point: you put the colour exactly where you want it and nowhere else.

It cares for and refreshes the colour of suede, nubuck and textile, which makes it a sensible choice for shoes built from a mix of materials. Collonil also rate it for high-tech uppers, so modern trainers are fair game rather than a gamble.

Collonil have been looking after leather in Germany since 1909 and their range runs from smooth leather to textile to technical fabrics. The 100ml bottle is the size that lives in most cupboards.

Why choose this black suede colour reviver?

  • Works to the millimetre around light soles. The sponge sits in the neck of the bottle, so you can run colour up to a white midsole or a line of pale stitching without flooding it. That is simply not possible with a spray.
  • Made for combination materials. Suede panel, mesh insert, textile tongue: one bottle handles all three. Mixed-material trainers are exactly where an aerosol causes the most collateral damage.
  • Refreshes colour and cares at the same time. It is a conditioning colour rather than a paint, so the nap stays soft and open instead of going crisp and shiny where the pigment landed.
  • Suitable for high-tech uppers too. Collonil rate it for technical materials as well as classic suede, which matters if your shoes are half fabric and half something you cannot name.
  • Black covers hard wear well. Black suede shows scuffing at the toe and along the heel counter faster than any other shade, and a solid pigment load evens those areas out in one pass.
  • No cloud of overspray indoors. You can do a pair on a sheet of newspaper at the kitchen table, which is more than you can say for an aerosol in February. No open window, no mask, no fine mist settling on everything nearby.

How to use the Collonil Black Suede Colour Reviver 751 – Nubuk plus Textile 100ml with Sponge Applicator

Everything depends on the shoe being clean and dry before the sponge touches it.

  1. Brush the shoes all over with a suede brush so no loose dirt is left sitting in the nap.
  2. If they are damp, let them dry at room temperature first, well away from a radiator.
  3. Shake the bottle, then press the sponge gently against a hidden area to start the flow and check the shade.
  4. Work the colour into the suede in short overlapping strokes, keeping the sponge lightly loaded.
  5. Get enough product onto the material for an even result, but stop before the surface looks wet.
  6. Let the shoes dry fully, then brush the nap up again with a suede brush to even out the finish.

My tip as a shoe specialist

Load the sponge, then work away from the edges rather than towards them. If you start at a white midsole you will always leave a dark line there, whereas if you start in the middle of a panel and feather outwards you keep full control of where the colour stops. Do the tongue and the heel counter last, since those two areas soak up the most product. And if you own the colourless version, it lifts the existing colour on shoes whose exact shade you cannot buy.

Frequently asked questions

Will it stiffen the nap?

Not if you keep the coats thin. It is a conditioning colour rather than a paint, and a brush over the dry shoe lifts the fibres back up so the suede feels like suede again. Heavy, wet coats are what make a nap go crisp.

Can I use it on black canvas trainers?

Yes, textile is one of the materials it is made for. Test a hidden patch first, because tightly woven canvas takes colour differently from an open suede nap and usually needs a lighter hand.

How do I keep it off the white midsole?

Work from the middle of each panel outwards and stop a couple of millimetres short of the sole, then feather that last edge with an almost dry sponge. If you do catch the rubber, wipe it straight away with a damp cloth, because the colour lifts easily while it is still wet. A strip of low-tack tape along the sole is worth the two minutes it takes. I always tape trainers and never bother on plain boots.
