Description
Collonil 1909 Crème de Luxe Medium Brown 398 – shoe care for the fussy
Medium brown is the hardest shade to keep looking right. Too little pigment and the shoe stays dull; too much of the wrong tone and a warm tan drifts orange or a cool brown goes muddy. This medium brown luxury shoe cream from the Collonil 1909 range is judged carefully enough to refresh the colour without shifting it, and it is the cream I use on my own brown Oxfords.
The 1909 Crème de Luxe is enriched with valuable natural waxes and oils, and it is meant for shoe care with the highest demands. It protects and pampers all smooth leathers while giving optimum colour refreshment and a perfect, colour-deep shine. It is a classic from Collonil’s exclusive 1909 care series, made in Germany, and it comes in a generous 100ml jar.
Why choose the Collonil 1909 Crème de Luxe?
The 1909 line is Collonil’s premium series, and this cream is the one that does the everyday heavy lifting:
- Natural waxes and oils. The formula is built on valuable natural waxes and oils that penetrate the leather fibres rather than sitting on the surface, so the shoe stays soft as well as smart.
- Colour-deep shine. Collonil call it a colour-deep gloss, and that is a fair description: the shine comes up out of the leather rather than looking like a film laid over it.
- Optimum colour refreshment. Medium brown 398 tops up the pigment where wear has thinned it, evening out toe caps, heels and creases without going darker than the original leather.
- Suitable for all smooth leathers. Calf, box calf, shell cordovan and high-gloss leathers all take this cream happily – one jar covers most of a wardrobe.
- A 100ml jar, made in Germany. Twice the size of the usual 50ml pot, from a Berlin company that has been making leather care since 1909.
How to use the Collonil 1909 Crème de Luxe
Brush, apply thinly, wait, buff. The waiting is the part most people skip:
- Brush the shoes clean and make sure they are dry. If they are damp, let them dry at room temperature first.
- Take a little cream on a soft cloth or an application brush – a small amount goes a surprisingly long way.
- Work a thin layer into the leather with circular movements. If it does not seem to be absorbing, take a touch more rather than pressing harder.
- Let the cream dry for about fifteen minutes so the oils and waxes have time to sink in.
- Polish thoroughly with a soft cloth or a polishing brush. A horsehair brush gives the most even result on brown leather.
Use a round applicator brush to work cream into the welt and the stitching, and a large polishing brush for the finish. If you want a mirror shine on the toe cap, add a wax polish on top once the cream is dry.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as Collonil’s standard shoe cream?
No. The 1909 Crème de Luxe is the premium formula from the exclusive 1909 series, with a higher proportion of natural waxes and oils and a noticeably deeper shine than the standard range.
Will medium brown match my tan shoes?
It is a true mid brown rather than a warm tan, so on lighter shoes it will deepen the shade a little. Test on the inside of a heel first if you are unsure.
Can I use it on shell cordovan?
Yes, sparingly, and let it soak in before buffing. Cordovan responds well to a cream with a high natural wax and oil content and badly to anything solvent-heavy.
Do I need a wax polish as well?
Only if you want a mirror finish. The cream alone gives a deep, even shine; a hard wax on top adds glass-like gloss on the toe cap and a little extra weather protection.
