Burgol White Shoe Pomade 098 – 100ml Swiss Wax Pomade for White Leather – the wax-rich pomade that pushes yellowed white leather back to white

White leather does not fade, it yellows, and that is a completely different problem. Fading is colour leaving the surface, and you fix it by putting colour back. Yellowing is the finish and the oils in the leather oxidising over time, which means the shoe is gaining a colour it never had. Nothing colourless will touch it, and a cheap white polish just leaves a chalky film on top of the yellow.

A pomade is the right tool because it is far richer in wax than an ordinary cream, so the white pigment is carried in something that bonds properly to the surface rather than sitting on it as dust. Burgol make theirs in Switzerland, and the texture is noticeably heavier and more buttery than a standard shoe cream.

It arrives in a 100ml jar, which is a large quantity by shoe care standards and will comfortably see several pairs through several years.

Why choose this white shoe pomade?

  • It puts white back rather than covering yellow. The pigment is properly opaque and carried in wax, so it works into the surface instead of dusting over it. A thin white film sitting on top of a yellowed shoe looks worse in daylight than the yellowing did.
  • A hundred millilitres is an unusually generous jar. Most coloured products come in fifty or less. White gets used more heavily than any other shade because trainers, summer shoes and bag trims all need it, so the extra volume genuinely earns its keep.
  • Swiss made, with a rich buttery texture. Burgol have a long reputation for this and it shows in how the pomade spreads. It stays workable on the cloth rather than drying to a crumb, which is what lets you get an even film on a large panel.
  • It nourishes as well as whitens. There are conditioning oils in the base alongside the wax and pigment, so the leather is being kept supple. Dry white leather cracks, and the cracks fill with grime that no whitener will lift back out.
  • Excellent on soles, welts and trims. White midsoles, welt stitching and the piping on a bag all go grey and yellow before the uppers do. A pomade this thick can be worked into those narrow areas with a fingertip and stays put.
  • It builds to a proper soft shine. Because the wax content is high, a white shoe finished with this can actually be buffed rather than left matt. That soft sheen is what makes a white shoe look cared for rather than merely repainted.

How to use the Burgol White Shoe Pomade 098 – 100ml Swiss Wax Pomade for White Leather

White is the least forgiving colour in the cupboard, so everything has to be clean before the pomade goes anywhere near the shoe. Any dirt left behind gets sealed in under the wax.

  1. Unlace the shoes completely, since grey laces will undo all your work at a glance.
  2. Brush off dust, then clean the uppers thoroughly with a leather cleaner and let them dry.
  3. Work a small amount of pomade into a clean white cloth rather than straight onto the shoe.
  4. Spread it over one panel at a time in thin even circles, keeping the film light.
  5. Push a little into the welt, the stitching and any trim with a fingertip or cotton bud.
  6. Leave it half an hour to harden, then buff with a clean brush to bring up a soft sheen.

My tip as a shoe specialist

Never use a white product on a shoe that is still damp. It is the one rule I would hang above the shoe cupboard. Wet leather absorbs unevenly, and a white pigment going into leather that is damp in some places and dry in others sets as a permanent blotch, lighter where it was dry and greyer where it was wet. It happens most often in winter when someone cleans a pair in the evening and finishes them the same night. Wait until the shoe is bone dry all the way through, which on a leather trainer means a full day away from any radiator. Rushing this on a white pair is one of the very few shoe care mistakes that cannot be corrected afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Will it whiten a shoe that has gone properly yellow?

It will lift it a very long way, and on most pairs that is enough to make them wearable again. Leather that has yellowed right through over many years keeps a faint warmth underneath, but two thin coats will get you close.

Can I use it on white trainers?

Yes, on the leather and coated panels. Keep it off mesh and knitted uppers, where wax sinks into the weave and goes grey. Those want a foam cleaner rather than a pigmented product.

Does it come off on clothing?

Not once it has been buffed properly. Leave it half an hour to harden and then brush it well, and the finish is stable. Wearing a white pair straight after applying it is asking for a mark on your trousers.
