Burgol Shoe Pomade Red 027 – a hundred years of Swiss shoe care in a 100ml tin

Red shoes are a statement, and a faded pair is a sad thing to see. This red shoe pomade from Burgol is the most serious answer I stock: a Swiss mixed-emulsion cream built on carnauba wax, beeswax and essential oils, with finely milled natural pigments that reactivate the colour rather than simply painting over it.

Burgol has been made in Switzerland since 1921 and the recipe has barely changed, because it did not need to. The high proportion of oils, fats and beeswax means the pomade sinks into the leather instead of sitting on the surface. That is what protects the leather structure from drying out and cracking, and what gives you that natural, silky lustre rather than a hard plastic gloss.

It is not the cheapest tin on the shelf at £14.95, but it is remarkably economical. Burgol reckon a single 100ml tin is enough to care for more than 200 pairs of medium-sized shoes, which puts the cost per polish somewhere close to nothing.

Why choose Burgol Shoe Pomade Red 027?

If you have never used a proper pomade cream before, here is what sets this one apart from an ordinary shoe polish.

  • Natural waxes and oils. Carnauba wax, beeswax and essential oils rather than cheap fillers. They penetrate the leather, keeping the fibres fed and flexible so the leather creases softly instead of cracking.
  • Colour reactivating. The natural pigments revive the existing red rather than masking it, which is why the finish looks like healthy leather and not like paint.
  • Silky natural shine. A soft, deep lustre that you can build with a brush. It also takes a wax polish beautifully on top if you want a mirror toe.
  • Extraordinarily economical. A 100ml tin is enough for more than 200 pairs of medium-sized shoes. You need only the smallest amount each time.
  • Swiss made since 1921. Still produced by hand by a family business, in small batches, to a recipe that has stood the test of a century.

How to use Burgol Shoe Pomade Red 027

The routine is simple, and the five minutes of resting time in the middle is where the nourishment actually happens.

  1. Remove the laces and brush the shoes down thoroughly with a dust brush to lift off grit and any old polish.
  2. Make sure the leather is completely dry, and use shoe trees if you have them so the upper is held smooth.
  3. Take a very small amount of pomade on a cloth or an applicator brush. Less than you think you need.
  4. Spread it evenly over the upper in small circular movements, working it into the creases, the toe and the heel counter.
  5. Let the cream soak into the leather for about five minutes.
  6. Brush briskly with a horsehair polishing brush until the shine comes up, then finish with a soft cloth.
  7. For a deeper colour on badly faded shoes, repeat with a second thin application.

One habit worth building: brush your shoes for thirty seconds after each wear. Do that and you will only need the pomade every ten to fifteen wears.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a shoe pomade and an ordinary polish?

A polishing wax works mainly on the surface and builds shine. A pomade cream like this one carries far more oils, fats and beeswax, so it penetrates and feeds the leather. Use the pomade for care and colour, and a wax on top only when you want a mirror finish.

Will 027 Red match my shoes exactly?

It is a true red rather than a burgundy or an orange-toned shade. Because the pigments reactivate the existing colour rather than covering it, small differences blend in well. As always, test on a hidden area such as the inside of the heel first.

Is it worth the price compared with a supermarket polish?

I think so, and the arithmetic helps. One tin treats hundreds of pairs, so the cost per application is tiny, and the leather itself lasts longer because it is being properly fed. It is one of those purchases that quietly saves you money.
