Description

Brush-it Medium Brown Leather Paint 21 – 25ml with Brush Applicator — the everyday brown that most brogues and boots actually are

Medium brown is the most common colour in any British wardrobe of leather shoes, and it is the shade I am asked about most often across the counter. A pair of mid brown Derbies, a chukka boot or a favourite satchel will pick up scuffs at the toe and along the sole edge long before anything structural goes wrong, and no amount of polishing will hide a mark where the surface has actually been taken off.

Brush-it is the answer to that particular problem. It is a highly opaque covering paint rather than a tint, so this medium brown leather paint fills in a scrape completely and leaves you with an even panel rather than a patched one. The 25ml pot carries the brush inside the cap, which means the applicator is always the right size for the job and you can pick out a welt or a stitch line without any improvising.

It is a repair tool first and a customising tool second, and it is equally at home on canvas, textile and plastic. A glass bead inside the pot keeps the pigment evenly mixed, so what you brush on is the shade printed on the label.

Why choose the Brush-it medium brown leather paint?

  • Opaque enough to hide a scrape. A tinted cream evens out fading; this rebuilds the colour where the surface has gone. That is a different job and it needs a different product.
  • The applicator is in the cap. You can work along a welt, into a seam or around stitching with proper control, which is exactly what an aerosol cannot give you.
  • The most matchable brown there is. Shade 21 is a balanced mid brown with no strong red or yellow lean, so it sits comfortably against the majority of British brown footwear.
  • Works on trainers and bags too. Canvas, textile, synthetic uppers and plastic trim all take the paint. One pot covers repairs across a good deal more than your smart shoes.
  • A sensible size for repairs. Twenty-five millilitres is right for a toe cap, a heel counter or a sole edge rather than a whole upper, which keeps the cost of a small fix small.
  • A glass mixing bead inside. Shake the pot and the bead redistributes the pigment properly. Without one, brush paints separate in the jar and the first coat comes out thin.

How to use the Brush-it medium brown leather paint

Almost every disappointing result I hear about comes down to the same skipped step, so do not be tempted to rush the degreasing.

  1. Take the laces out, brush off loose grit and wipe the shoes down with a barely damp cloth.
  2. Degrease the area properly with a leather cleaner or preparer, until the surface looks matt and carries no old wax, polish or silicone.
  3. Let the leather dry completely, then mask the sole edge and any trim with low-tack tape and stuff the shoes with paper to hold their shape.
  4. Shake the pot hard for twenty seconds, load the brush lightly and wipe the surplus off against the rim so it does not pool.
  5. Brush thin, even strokes in a single direction and work one panel at a time, allowing thirty to sixty minutes between coats.
  6. Build two or three coats for full opacity, then leave the shoes a whole day before you wear them so the film cures rather than simply drying.

My tip from behind the counter

Do the sole edge with the shoe turned upside down. Gravity is what produces those little runs that dry into ridges along the welt, and inverting the shoe removes the problem entirely. It feels awkward for about thirty seconds and then it feels obvious. While you are down there, run the brush over the heel counter as well, because that is the second place a brown shoe loses its colour.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix it with another shade to match my shoes?

You can, and with brown it is often worth doing. Decant a little of each into a saucer, mix thoroughly and test on the inside of the heel before you commit. Keep a note of the rough proportions, because you will almost certainly want to repeat the mix when the other shoe needs attention.

Will the paint crack when the shoe bends?

Not if you apply it in thin coats onto properly degreased leather. Cracking nearly always traces back to one heavy coat, or to paint laid straight over old polish so it never keys into the surface. Thin layers with drying time between them flex with the shoe.

Can I polish over it afterwards?

Yes, and I would encourage it. Once the paint has cured for a full day, a matching cream or wax over the top feeds the leather around the repair and blends the edges of the painted area. It also puts a protective layer over the paint itself, which is what makes a repair last through a winter. Just do not polish it the same evening, because the film needs that time to harden first.
