Avel Crème Rénovateur Dark Green Leather Furniture Cream 20 – 250ml – bring a tired leather sofa back to life

A dark green leather chesterfield is a wonderful thing right up until the sun gets at it. Daylight lifts the pigment out of the arms and the back, headrests pick up the marks of daily life, and after a few years the deep bottle green reads as a flat, greyish olive instead.

A dark green leather furniture cream is what puts that right. Avel is a French house that has been making leather care since the 1930s, and this Crème Rénovateur is their flagship. It is rich in beeswax and mink oil, around 57 per cent wax and nearly 9 per cent mink oil, which is a far more generous formula than most furniture creams on the shelf.

Because it carries a good load of pigment it does two jobs at once. The oils feed the leather so it stays supple and creases softly, while the pigment evens out the faded patches and takes the dark green back towards its original depth. One 250ml tin goes a very long way, and it smells pleasantly of new leather, which is a nice bonus on a Sunday afternoon job.

Why choose the Avel dark green leather furniture cream?

  • Feeds deeply with mink oil. Nearly 9 per cent mink oil keeps the hide supple, which is what stops the creases in seat cushions turning into cracks.
  • Rich in beeswax. A high beeswax content leaves a protective film that helps the leather shrug off dirt and light spills between cleans.
  • Restores faded colour. The dark green pigment evens out sun-bleached backs and worn arms, and once it is buffed there is no risk of it transferring onto clothing.
  • Not just for sofas. The same cream suits armchairs, dining chairs, car seats, bags, jackets and any hard-wearing smooth leather item in a similar shade.
  • Goes a very long way. Avel reckon one 250ml tin will maintain a three-piece suite several times over, and applied as thinly as it should be that is about right.

How to use the Avel dark green leather furniture cream

  1. Remove any surface dirt and dust first, working into the seams and the piping.
  2. If the leather has gone a long time without care, clean and feed it first with a cleansing or nourishing lotion and let it dry.
  3. Apply the cream thinly with a soft cloth, working one panel at a time rather than tackling a whole sofa at once.
  4. Let it dry and absorb for a while so the oils can reach into the hide.
  5. Buff off with a clean, dry cloth until the surface feels dry to the touch and no pigment lifts onto the cloth.

My tip from behind the counter

Panel by panel is the whole trick with furniture. If you cream an entire three-seater before you start buffing, the first section has gone tacky by the time you get back to it and you will fight it. Do one cushion or one arm, buff it out, then move on. And always start underneath or behind, where nobody looks, so you can see how the shade takes before you commit to the seat backs.

Frequently asked questions

Will the pigment rub off onto my clothes?

Not once it has been buffed off properly. That final buff with a clean dry cloth is not optional, and if any colour still lifts onto the cloth, keep going until it does not. Applied thinly and buffed well, it stays exactly where you put it.

Can I use it on suede or aniline leather?

Not on suede or nubuck, no. On very soft aniline leather I would test on a hidden panel first, because pigmented creams can look slightly heavier on unfinished hides. On pigmented and semi-aniline furniture leather, which is most sofas, it is exactly the right product.

How much do I need for a three-piece suite?

One 250ml tin will cover a three-seater and two armchairs several times over if you apply it as thinly as you should. For a first treatment on badly faded leather, I would keep a second tin to hand.
