Avel Crème Rénovateur 16 Beige – put the colour back into a pale leather sofa
Pale leather furniture is beautiful and unforgiving. A beige sofa shows every worn armrest and every shiny patch where people sit, and once the colour has gone thin there is no polishing it back – you need pigment. That is what this tin is for.
Avel’s Crème Rénovateur is a French leather cream that cares and recolours at the same time. Shade 16 is a soft, natural beige, which is the most common shade in pale leather upholstery and one of the hardest to match with anything generic.
The composition is what makes it work: this beige furniture cream is roughly 57% wax and close to 9% mink oil. The oil goes into the leather and keeps it supple; the wax stays nearer the surface and gives protection, a soft sheen and real water and dirt resistance. Between them they stop the dryness that leads to those hard creases across a seat cushion.
A 250ml tin covers a great deal of ground. As a rough guide, one tin will maintain a three-seat sofa and two armchairs several times over. It is not only for furniture either – the same cream is excellent on leather bags, jackets, luggage and car interiors, anywhere pale leather needs feeding and its colour lifting.
Why choose this beige furniture cream?
- Pigment as well as care. Most furniture creams only feed the leather. This one carries real pigment, so worn armrests and faded seat cushions come back to an even beige instead of merely being conditioned.
- Around 57% wax. That high wax content is what gives the protective, water and dirt repellent film. Spills sit on the surface long enough to be wiped rather than soaking straight in.
- Close to 9% mink oil. Mink oil penetrates deeply and keeps upholstery leather supple, which is the difference between a sofa that softens with age and one that goes hard and cracks along the seat.
- A generous 250ml tin. One tin will maintain a three-seat sofa and a pair of armchairs several times over, which makes it very good value for a pigmented cream.
- Not only for sofas. It works equally well on leather bags, jackets, luggage, car seats and steering wheels – anywhere pale leather needs feeding and recolouring.
- French leather care with real history. Avel have been making leather care in France since the 1930s, and the Crème Rénovateur is the product the range is built around.
How to use Avel Crème Rénovateur
- Vacuum the piece and wipe it down with a leather cleaner to lift dust, body oils and old care products.
- Let the leather dry completely, and test the cream on a hidden area first – underneath a cushion is ideal.
- Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, working it into the leather in circles over one panel at a time.
- Concentrate on the armrests, headrests and seat fronts, which is where wear and colour loss always appear first.
- Leave the cream to settle for around fifteen minutes so the oils can be absorbed.
- Buff gently with a clean, dry cloth to even out the finish and bring up a soft sheen. Repeat thinly if more colour is needed.

Frequently asked questions
Will it match my beige sofa exactly?
Shade 16 is a soft, natural beige that suits most pale upholstery, but leather ages and no cream is a guaranteed exact match. Always test on a hidden area first – under a cushion or on the back of the piece – and build the colour in thin coats. Two thin applications blend into the surrounding leather far better than one heavy one.
Can I use it on aniline or suede upholstery?
It is made for smooth, finished leather – the sort most sofas and armchairs are covered in. Suede, nubuck and unfinished aniline leathers need a different approach entirely, because a pigmented wax cream will clog the nap or blotch on an absorbent surface. If you are unsure what your upholstery is, test in a hidden spot before you commit.
