Avel Colourless Furniture Care Cream 02 – Creme Renovateur 250ml – French leather food for sofas and chairs

A leather sofa dries out from the inside long before it looks tired on the outside. Central heating pulls the moisture out, the sun bleaches the arms, and one day you sit down and hear that dry crackle from the seat cushion. By the time the surface is visibly cracked, the damage is done and no cream will undo it.

This is the cream I keep recommending to stop that happening. Avel make it in France, and if the name is unfamiliar it should not be: Avel are the people behind Saphir, so you are buying the same house that supplies half the world with premium leather care. The Creme Renovateur is their pigmented furniture cream, and 02 is the colourless version.

Colourless is the one to reach for when you want the feeding and the protection but not a shade decision. Because there is no pigment in it you can use it happily on pale cream leather, on two-tone pieces and on anything where you would rather not risk a colour mismatch.

Why choose the Avel Colourless Furniture Care Cream?

  • Mink oil and beeswax that reach the fibres. This is a rich cream, not a watery lotion. The mink oil carries deep into the hide and the beeswax stays nearer the surface, so you get suppleness underneath and protection on top from one application.
  • No pigment, so no colour risk. The 02 colourless version treats the leather without altering the shade. That makes it the safe choice for cream, ivory, pale grey and multi-tone furniture where a pigmented cream could go wrong.
  • Cleans lightly as it feeds. It lifts the everyday film of body oils and dust that dulls a leather sofa, which is often all a piece needs to look years younger. Heavily neglected leather wants a proper cleaner first.
  • Makes the surface water and dirt repellent. Spilt tea, damp coats and sticky fingers all become far less alarming once the leather has a wax film on it. Things sit on the surface long enough for you to wipe them off.
  • One 250ml tub goes a very long way. You apply this sparingly, a thin film at a time, so 250ml is enough for a three-seat sofa and a pair of armchairs with plenty left over for the next round in six months.
  • Not just for furniture. The same cream is excellent on leather jackets, car seats, bags and boots. Anything in finished smooth leather that has gone dry and thirsty will take it happily.

How to use Avel Colourless Furniture Care Cream 02

  1. Vacuum the piece first, working the soft brush attachment into the seams and buttons, then wipe the surface with a barely damp cloth and let it dry.
  2. If the leather has been neglected for years, use a dedicated leather cleaning lotion before you start; a care cream feeds leather but it is not a heavy cleaner.
  3. Shake or stir the tub, then put a small amount on a lint-free cotton cloth. You can also work it in with your fingertips, which many people find gives better control.
  4. Treat one panel at a time rather than the whole sofa at once: a seat cushion, then a back, then an arm. Thin, even coverage beats a thick smear every time.
  5. Leave the cream to soak in for around ten minutes. On very dry leather a second thin coat afterwards is worthwhile, but wait for the first to be absorbed.
  6. Buff gently with a clean, dry cloth to even out the finish and lift any surplus, then let the piece rest for a few hours before anyone sits on it.

My tip from behind the counter

Do the whole piece, not just the tired bit. If you feed only the worn seat cushion you end up with one panel that looks and feels different from the rest, and that is more obvious than the dryness was. And always test on the back or underside first.

Frequently asked questions

Will a colourless cream still darken my pale leather?

Any oil-rich cream can deepen the tone very slightly while it is wet, in the same way water darkens a stone, but on finished leather that lifts as it dries and settles. There is no pigment in 02 to leave a shade behind. All the same, do test a patch on the underside or the back of the piece before you start on a cream or ivory sofa.

How often should I treat a leather sofa?

Twice a year is the sensible rhythm for a sofa in a centrally heated living room, and once a year is plenty if the room stays cooler and out of direct sun. The signal to watch for is the feel rather than the look: when the surface starts to feel dry and slightly papery under your palm, it is asking to be fed.

Can I use it on a leather jacket as well?

Yes, and it is very good at it. Avel built this cream to be rich enough for thick upholstery hide, which is exactly what a heavy jacket or a well-used bag wants. Apply it sparingly with a cloth, let it soak in, then buff properly so nothing transfers to your clothes.
